Thanks again for the heads up! |

Do you mean "upgrade" to XP (actually I have both, each OS on a separate drive)? Hope it won't cause a stir but I am a Vista fan (though not particularly a Microsoft fan, if that apparent paradox can be reconciled). |

| reply to Steely This just looks like an earlier version that is being repackaged. They offered ABS 6 free before ABS 7 came out, so perhaps v.8's arrival is near.
That's how I started with ABS, by taking advantage of one of these free offers. Then when the next version came out, I was offered it at a reduced price. -- Life is simply one damned thing after another. |

| reply to takeahike said by takeahike :Do you mean "upgrade" to XP . . . ? I didn't say that. But yes, that's the 'obvious' answer. I don't think this is the first or only piece of software that doesn't seem to perform correctly on Vista. Whether or not that's Vista's fault or Ashampoo's, I don't know.
I'm pretty much all done denigrating Vista. People are free for themselves to see how it performs and acts, and what kind of bang they're getting for their buck. My only statement on that matter is that I think, by and large, many folks who have tried it have come to realize what I and many others felt about it all along-- and I think just the tip of the iceberg has so far been uncovered.
But that has little to do with this thread, other than to address any issues that may or may not exist between Vista and Ashampoo. Vista is out there, and each individual must decide for themselves if they consider it worth running, and/or whether or not they want to run it. It doesn't affect me much, one way or the other.
But until a better solution is uncovered, I'll simply say again that there is an obvious, though possibly not desired answer for you-- don't use Ashampoo on your Vista machine. Use something that works well with Vista.
Best of luck with it. Seriously. |

4 edits | reply to howie I just tried 6.5 again even though I knew I had tried it before. Just doesn't seem to make any difference--still the same slow opening of the program. There's a bug in the 6.5 uninstall (says cannot open install.log). I've gotten around it by clicking on the unwise.exe file directly (in the uninstall folder in ASB 6 program files), which brings up the install log in the file manager and then renaming that to BS6_uninstall.exe. Then the uninstall works. I was also sent a utility specifically to uninstall this version from Ashampoo after I complained--it's on my work machine, however.
Back to the slow load, I have scoured around and found several other freeware burning programs that I use when I have less patience. A couple I really like is Infra Recorder and Free Easy Burner (though had a problem installing Easy Burner 2.0, so I use 1.3.1). I don't have any other problem with any of the Ashampoo burners--in fact, once you get them open, they work flawlessly.
Thanks Howie and ArgleBargle--can always count on both of you! |

I know all the ABS programs go through the "enumerating drives" when opening. Is that where you notice the slowdown?
