Thespis : My experience is also with the DirecTivo, and that is what I recall from my discussions on Tivo Community. I would LOVE to have the Tivo interface back again, but I'd settle for a mainstream guide provider instead of what we've got.
Edit: After some further reading, it appears that each series has a unique ID and each program within the series has a unique ID. This still doesn't eliminate all errors. Tivos miss recordings too if the guide info doesn't contain the proper ID numbers (and it actually happens occasionally!)

DirecTV's DVR was like that too. I believe they key off of some unique series/show identifier. DirecTV's R15 had a mother of a limitation - you could only set up a Series Link (aka Season Pass... Series) once for a specific series. If it was on two different channels - too bad. But if there was another series with the exact same title, you could set that up as a separate series. That tells me that it's not using the series name as the (only) key.

A Verizon DVR running the Tivo interface (which is what CurGeorge8 mentioned and I replied to) would have the same problems if furnished the same faulty guide info that the current DVR's receive.

Yes and no. Some guides (and I think that Tivo is one of them) are designed for this type of situation and ignore certain words (like "The"). Thus they treat "The Biggest Loser" and "Biggest Loser" as the same show. I agree that if the data is completely wrong (lists the wrong show, etc.) there is nothing that can be done (except to correct the data at the source) but an experienced company (like Tivo) can certainly do some simple things to catch some of the common errors.
