Re: [DIRECTV] B Band Converter

I would call and double check. I can almost guarantee any hr20/h20 given as a replacement is leased. I was in the same situation. HR10-250 died, I was paying the DirecTV Protection plan so it got swapped out with a _leased_ hr20-100. It also required a 2 year contract renewal.

waja, what is required for this Directv Protection Plan? So, it didn't cost you anything to get a new HR20 to replace your HR10? Thanks.

Don't know what Directway is but DirecTV does not require a phone line for its current HD DVRs (HR20/HR21) unless you want to order Pay-per-View and do not want to do it on the Web site. The installer may ask you to plug it into a phone jack or may tell you that you should do so but that is just a formality since the DVR doesn't need it.

I guess what it comes down to is;
1) Upgrade with new DW equipment from DW and have a 1-2 (or whatever) year commitment.
2) Stay with what DW equpment I have. Minus the many HD channels. And no commitment with DW.
3) Stay with cable, that has DVR and no commitment. A hand full of HD channels but......
(I mention the DVR because as I understand it, Direcway requires a phone line for this service. VOIP may or may not work... it isn't reliable for data.

Possible. But the latest buzz is that, because so many are ordering DirecTV right now, they aren't making quite as many deals with people. You might get lucky, though.

My big thing was that I own my stuff. I don't want to have a contract for anything.
Can I get a reciever on Ebay (for example) that will work?
I was in the same situation. My solution was the DirecTv protection plan. It has some very nice features. If your owned equipment fails, you get a replacement which you will own and your service contract (if you have one) will not be extended. DirecTv replaces HR10-250s with HR20-100s. You also get to keep the HR10-250 as they have no use for it. I was also able to get a 5-lnb antenna for free with free installation. The CSR used a "Free-move" installation.

Correct.

The DirecTivo units, like the HR10-250, got their guide information via the phone line, so it was required.

The D* branded receivers all get their guide info from the satellite(s).

Hooking to the phone is not really necessary, except for ordering PPV. However, you can do that without any additional charges if you order via the web site. The only time you are charged extra is if you call and order PPV from a CSR.

One more consideration.
I DO NOT have a land line.
I do however have a VOIP line.
I was able to get and send a FAX.
I was NOT able to connect to a dial up ISP.

Will the HR20/H20 or anything else from Direcway work with VOIP?

It's my understanding that any receiver activation constitutes the creation or renewal (for an existing customer) of a 2 year programming commitment. Now, I could be wrong about that - but the only way to get a straight answer (maybe?!) is to call D* up and ask.

Can you get an HR20/H20 MPEG 4 capable receiver off of e-Bay ?
Sure. Before you commit to buying it, you need to get the serial number and access card information from the current owner, and call D* up to see if the unit is "clear". Most - but not all - HR20/H20 units were done under the new 'lease' arrangement - so you would need to verify that the person selling it actually owns it. D* will not activate it:
a) if it's a leased unit that shouldn't be changing hands
b) it's an owned unit, but the 'former' owner has outstanding bills due.

IMO it's not worth the hassle.

There is absolutely nothing you can do with an H10 to get any of the new HD.

NADA.
Zippo!

It simply doesn't have the necessary hardware to receive MPEG 4 channels.

Not that it matters, but my H10 is picking up my locals. (Of course I can't view them becaue I am not subscribed)
It also has SOME of the HD channels.
So with that in mind, I was hoping the receiver (and 3 lnb dish) would work with the B converter.
Edit add. Would a firmware (software) push from DW solve this even with the H10?

Whats different from the H10 to the H20? I thought the only difference was a DVR?
The HR2x/H2x understand MPEG 4 (as well as MPEG 2)
The HR1x/H1x do not - they're MPEG 2 only.

All the new HD and even locals for almost a year in some areas, have been in MPEG 4.

So, the converter "should" work for me to see all the satellites?

And, to add to that, I don't believe the H10 will work even with the BBC and 5-LNB. You'll need either the H20 or the HR20 receiver. (Or the "21" series)

If you had the new 5LNB dish, it would allow you to see the new HD channels.

More technically:
the D10 satellite is using Ka 'lo' band frequencies. The other Ka satellites use Ka 'hi' band frequencies.
D* receivers recognize the signals at the latter (higher freq's).
The "B-Band Converter" shifts the Ka 'lo' signal up into a higher range that the receivers understand.

Even with the 5LNB dish, if you don't have (functional) BBCs, you won't receive the new HD.

Whoever told you that is wrong. The new HD channels are on completely different birds. It doesn't matter what you connect to it, you'r not going to see the new HD channels.
