| Ubuntu, others- Still no support for HDMI input to monitor?
I have the latest Ubuntu 7.10 on live CD. WindowsXP My video card is an ATI Radeon x1600 series.
When i boot from CD. the CD loads for a bit and eventually the monitor goes into standby mode(no display whatsoever). This has happened with previous versions of Ubuntu- not to mention several other distros. Only PCLinux OS was able to load properly- but now even that is a crap shoot. I know that the issue is the HDMI input to my monitor cause when i switch to regular old fashioned cables I see a display. I am eager to lean Linux and willing to spend the time. But with no display I cant even get started. I do not intend to use old cables for my monitor. I will stick with HDMI.
Anyone have any ideas? -- It's viruses...the word virii does not exist. |

| reply to Lithp Thanks for the advice. I have no idea what xorg is. I'll do some searching. I am completely new to Linux. and have never had it running for more than 10 minutes (although I would like it to be permanent). Hopefully I can get this resolved. -- It's viruses...the word virii does not exist. |

| I ran into this same problem with WinXP Pro after replacing the original LCD monitor (which had failed). The system uses an nVidia card, which was configured for DVI output. When I fired up the new monitor, it remained black. Fortunately the new monitor has both analog (conventional) and DVI input connectors; I connected an analog cable, and the initial loading display immediately appeared -- but Windows itself was too fuzzy to be legible. I then reconnected the DVI cable, leaving the analog cable in place, and now it works. When it's re-booted, the monitor comes up in analog mode initially and remains there until Windows loads. At that point, it switches to digital (DVI) mode, and is as sharp as ever. Perhaps a similar approach might work for you.
"Xorg" is the program that provides your video display in Linux distributions. A file named "xorg.conf" that lives in the "X11" directory handles all the configuration for the display. I don't recommend that you try to modify it, however, since it's quite possible to permanently damage your monitor by changing the wrong data in this file. Instead, use Ubuntu's system administration utilities to make any changes... -- Jim Kyle |
