WOW throttling usenet speeds?

just curious if anyone is using powerusenet as their news server and have experienced a reduction in download speed. everything was working great until two days ago and now my max d/l speed from usenet is about 150KB/s. i get full speed during speed tests and from the internet in general. it's only usenet that seems throttled. i have tried both with and without my router in the loop with no change. any ideas?

This has been going on for a couple of years at least. I'm surprised more users don't complain.

Go to »www.giganews.com/performance.html and do the speed test from both servers. You will most likely find that your speed is much higher using the European server but if you try to use that server it will not authenticate your username and password.

Farther down the page will be your reverse traceroute info and I'm betting that WOW has you on sprintlink. I'm also willing to bet that two days ago WOW had you on at&t and you had full download speed.

Try spoofing the MAC address in your router in order to draw a differnet IP address. You may have to do this several times but if you are lucky you will get an IP that will put you back on at&t.

Calling customer service doesn't help. They don't have a clue.

Sure, just remember that only hex is allowed.(0-F) The first three octets indicate the manufacturer.

00-60-97-xx-xx-xx would be a 3com part and 00-C0-F9-xx-xx-xx would be Motorola for example.

It might be necessary to reboot your modem along with your router after making the change. WOW allows three IP addresses per account and the MAC addresses associated with those IP's is stored in the modem.

Good luck.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but WOW has never throttled Usenet. I get max download speeds from my Usenet provider all the time, and it doesn't matter what pipe I may be connected through.

You do use more than one connection, right?

Same here. I use Grab-it and when I use Astraweb, I max out my 6 meg service with 8 connections going. When I tried switching to WOW/Giganews, it dropped to about 50K/sec with 4 connections at once. Maybe it's a Giganews problem?

I get full connection speeds to both the provided Giganews (news.wideopenwest.com) account and my Easynews account. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 connections to max it out, but it always does. Not sure what the problem is there.

Powerusenet and Giganews are one and the same.

No problems here.

From your response, what I suggested didn't work. Did you sign up for the "secure" account with powerusenet? If not try upgrading and use SSL on ports 443 or 563. You can reconfigure you existing newsreader if it supports SSL or install an add-on if it doesn't.

A game of cat and mouse.

Like John, I use Astraweb as well and my downloads lately have been total crap. I tried different ports, same result. Speeds are hit and miss and are usually in the toilet the entire transfer. I'm going to call WOW or email them and see what's up. I know it's a WOW problem because I called my friend on the other side of Columbus with TWC/RR and his Astraweb transfers max out his connection and he's been having no problems getting full speed out of Astraweb.

Everything is fine here. 4 connections basically max out my line (6 mbps).

Choose a different route. I know GN and NH let you do that. I assume most of the others do as well. Don't know about Astra, since I haven't had them in years.

powerusenet does not provide this.
