DNS server IPs?

Does anyone know if there are system wide DNS servers or are they assigned by area?

If they are system wide, can someone post them?
I dont get to see what they are when in DMZ mode.

TIA

I am not sure about it being system wide, but the DNS servers that show up in my RG are 68.94.156.1 and 68.94.157.1.

Typically though, the DHCP server in the RG assigns the computers to use the RG itself as the DNS server and then it will relay the request on up.

If the UVerse DNS servers are the same as for DSL, they are "Anycast" servers. Same two IP addresses and host names, but regionally assigned from a pool of servers covering the entire AT&T footprint.

Why bother using their dns. I love opendns.com

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are the ones they give you and you can do more with them. DNS issues are the last thing I have to worry about.

I just want barebones, no frills DNS. You have sign up for an OpenDNS account, and then tweak your account settings to get what AT&T gives you by default.

Granted, you don't have to pay for that OpenDNS account, but...you have to have that account, and tweak the settings to get the no frills options.

I haven't had any DNS issues with the AT&T DNS servers.

You don't have to pay or even sign up for a free OpenDNS account to use it, I don't know where you read that.

If you don't create an account, just using their DNS server alone is the 'no frills' version...is it not?

I am pretty sure that I mentioned that... :(

AFAIK, what you get with the "no account" IP addresses defaults to "error correcting redirection"; i.e., you type in 'microsoft.con' and you don't get a 'server doesn't exist' error.

Compare:
C:\Documents and Settings\User>nslookup microsoft.con 208.67.222.222
Server: resolver1.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.222.222

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: microsoft.con.aosake.net
Address: 208.67.219.130

With:
C:\Documents and Settings\User>nslookup microsoft.con dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
Server: dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
Address: 68.94.156.1

*** dnsr1.sbcglobal.net can't find microsoft.con: Non-existent domain

The last one is "no frills".
