[Newsgroups] Does RCN provide newsgroup servers?

I am trying to help an RCN user set up newsgroups. The heading on the »RCN Forum FAQ FAQ is 1.2. Email and Newsgroup settings. Yet there is no newsgroup info.

Does RCN provide newsgroup access, and if so, where is the info as to how to set it up?

Good point, there's some work that needs to be done to our forum FAQ.

...it's always open for member submissions too

I did a forum search on newsgroups, and camp up with a shortlist.

Till folks chime in with replies..perhaps there's some info you might find there?

RCN does provide newsgroup servers, but they seem to be capped at a pretty low download rate. It takes a very long time to download headers, and you would need to be *very* patient to download binaries.

Point your news client to news.rcn.com or news.rcn.net (both resolve to the same ip).

Limit 2 connections per IP, must be originating from within the rcn network, no logins/pw's required.

usenet is outsourced for several years now to giganews, which you'll see when you look up news.rcn.com. It's on the standard port 119.

This forum has de facto replaced rcn.general though there are a few scattered posts there every few months.

Thanks. That would be a good addition to the forum FAQ.

My friend now has newsgroups working fine now based on this info. The speed exceeded expectations.

The FAQ has been updated too.

Thanks.

What are speed expectations?

@rcn.com

I noticed quite a few isp's have switched to letting giganews host their newsgroups (comcast & rcn to start - comcast doesn't limit speed, but they only give you 2gb a month, rcn doesn't limit how much you download, but limits speed).

For RCN I used to get 200-350k per second off their newsgroups, right now I'm getting about 40k. I pay for their 20MBPS connection too, which when I'm using giganews directly I get about 2 megs a second.

Hmm, I just tried to connect to news.rcn.com from outside rcn's network. Required authentication, but using %username%@rcn.com and %password%, it let me in. Haven't tested how fast it is yet from outside rcn's network (I imagine the same limitations). But that said, seeing twcrr's recent caps on speed and 4 concurrent connections, adding 2 rcn ones wouldn't be too bad (my parents have rcn).

Guess this is good news for those on the go who want to still be able to have a usenet to connect to. Just need to provide credentials Hope this helps some
