| U-verse at&t employment and other such matters.
I do realize this is the ADSL Fast Access forum but there seems to be quite an interest in employment recently and since this thread »Neighborhood upgrade? has taken a drift from neighborhood upgrades to being a part of the upgrades I got the idea to start this one from the beginning for the employment purpose and let the up-grade thread remain more on subject.
I have attached a couple of the test guides and if anyone else can add anything that might help out please post.
Thanks Wayne -- If you cannot fix it with a buttset and some beanies you ain't a technician. |

| Yeah I kinda hijacked that other thread.
So to you vets with the phone co around here what do you think about staying employed after the end of a contract?
If you have read the other thread you know that I am up for outside plant tech, but worry about it being a limited term two year contract. I have applied for the premises tech now as well only because it is a regular employee position and I would not have to worry about losing my job in two years for no other reason than two years have gone by.
Anyone been in a situation like this with ATT before?
I did a job preview for the OPT and they said we would NOT be allowed to bid on any other jobs within the company while under the contract, but that a lot of people are due to retire just before the two years is up and they may allow us to apply just before the end of the two year term, but maybe not.
Lots of buts there so I don't know which way to go.
Any suggestions? |

| I'm sure I would stand a better chance than anyone off the street, but I can't afford a gap in employment. I also can't see how I would be any better off than anyone else hired today if there are more of us on the two year contract then there are retiring.
I dunno.
Does anyone think it may be better to do a less desirable job now just to get my foot in the door and be a regular employee and then be able to move to another position inside the company?
How does moving from one position to another like that happen anyway? I always heard that if you can get anything to get your foot in the door...do it. Then you can apply for other jobs and transfer locations, positions....etc.
Is this true? Or has this maybe changed since SBC took over? |

| reply to Splitpair If I were you I would try and get on as an OPT, we were told that the prem tech title would not be covered by a CWA contract.
I know they are hiring OPT's as temp, but that will be your best way yo get your foot in the door.
I hired on 3 years ago as an temp OPT and was made a permanate employee in 6 months, not saying that is going to happen to you but they will offer some temp people permanate jobs if they do a good job. The sooner you get in the better. |

I would take the OPT title more pay and if you don't FU at the end of your term or maybe sooner you can bid out to another title or go non-term as on OPT.

| reply to Splitpair Here's what's available, and where. »https://www.bellsouth.com/employment/Ext···No=10161
Int the drop down box, choose Installation & Maintenance\Repair\Construction
Then the state.
The jobs are under AT&T Outside Technical Positions (location)
Looks like the only place they're hiring Premises Technicians is Atlanta right now, but they're hiring Temp OPT's just about everywhere, except for North Carolina and Kentucky. |

| Nope, they're hiring term OPTs in North Carolina too...20 of them locally that I know about. They've not posted them yet though. |

| That sounds better. I couldn't figure out why they weren't hiring anybody there. They got the legislation they wanted in NC, and announced they were going to be spending $600 million for starters.
So anybody hear anything about hiring in Kentucky? |

| reply to Splitpair How long does it take them to call you back anyway? I have qualified on all tests (except pole climbing, but as I understand you have to get hired first anyway). I have done the job preview with managers. I have done the drug test and DOT Physical, my background was done a couple months ago, but I have consented to a new one since they didn't seem to know this.
The people emailing me about this all don't respond at all even though they say to email them with questions.
Is there something else I need to do yet? Besides wait that is... |

| Well to answer my own question for anyone following this...it depends on what job you want...
Turns out that applying for more than one job at a time is forbidden in ATT land. That is what was taking them extra time. I guess two managers got together and found me on both of their lists and said wait a min!
They told me what the details of each job would be and I opted for OPT. The prem tech is indeed NOT a union position and starting pay is $9-$15 DOQ. While you are able to bid on other jobs in the company I just can't live on that money. So I am banking on getting something at the end of the two years. |

I just have to not eat too much pumpkin pie because class starts right after the turkey holiday! hehehe |

| reply to Splitpair We were told that the Premise Tech position would top out at $15/hour and would have no defined pension benefit. Also while an employee is in that position, even though they can bid on other company jobs he/she would not accrue any seniority. So if you spent two years in that job you would start at 0 days when you transfer. I can tell you that seniority is VERY important. Especially in the case of a surplus because whoever is the last to show up is the first to leave. It also matters in bidding for other jobs, vacation picks and in some cases overtime selection. I would certainly opt for something in I&R/Construction as my first choice. |

They'll be adding new crews pretty rapidly, so the demand for techs willing to have half their brain sucked out will be huge. |

| reply to Splitpair Something to consider when choosing a title.
Interesting plan and if carried out it ought to be a fun ride. It's going to be tough to live on the pay one will make as a Tier 2 tech (POTS, DSL OPT Cable).

| Nah, the high school drop-outs they'll be able to recruit at that wage will be quite happy. Incompetent, but happy.
The contract expires in August, 2009. Don't know how you feel, but by August, I'm usually looking for a break anyway. It's hot, I've usually been working 60 hour weeks since late May, the idea of a strike is pretty attractive just to have a little free time.
September is usually when the bass start their top water bite, deer season opens in October, then you've got the holidays. Just once, I'd like to be off on the day after Thanksgiving.
Figure we come back to the table in January and see if anybody from management has come to their senses yet. If not, well, the weather in January is pretty ugly too. January is also duck season, so it's not like I'll be sitting around the house bored. |
