Re: Burning a dvd of a program recorded on dvr said by TrueGreen:I'm looking for a way to burn a program recorded on my dvr to a dvd, preferably thru my computer using the MediaManager. In other words I want to save programs recorded to my dvr as I used to save them on a vhs tape. Would appreciate any suggestions. Unfortunately, the Verizon DVR does not let you download recordings to your PC. Only the Tivo does that.
The most you can do with the Verizon DVR is connect it to your PC with Firewire, and then record content as it is played using the CapDVHS utility. This only works for locals and music channels. If you want to mess around with that to record your locals, you can find instructions here.
Only the Tivo lets you copy high-def recordings to your computer over your home network, as seen in the pictures below. Once you've downloaded recordings from the Tivo using a web browser, a program like VideoRedo TVSuite will automatically remove all commercials and burn them to DVD.

 | Thanks KenAF, this answers my question. Hopefully Verizon will allow this in the future. |

Does your burner let you record every program on your DVR? I just got a Samsung combo DVD burner/VCR but have not tested burning anything from my DVR yet.
Some people said that some premium channels will not let you burn onto a DVD because of copy protection. |

| From FIOS it isn't a problem. Currently all content on FIOS here has no copy protection. On Comcast some of the premium movies do and some don't. For instance Star Wars Episode 1 is copy protected while the 5 other films are not. With my DVD burner if I have an active HDMI output while trying to record copy protected content it won't record. IF the HDMI output isn't active then there isn't a problem. Of course on non copy protected content there is never a problem. I have my HDMi output going to a manual 2 way HDMI switch. And on the rare occassion I record something to DVD that is copy protected, I just switch to the empty port. That way I don't have to muck around with disconnecting any cables.

Just last week TiVo activated TiVo to Go and Multi room viewing for the TiVoHD and Series 3. As long as the content isn't copy protected, which nothing is on my FIOS, I can transfer the HD programs to my PC and burn them to disc. And with the HD DVD format you can burn the HD DVD format to a DVD and view the HD content on an HD DVD player. Or just convert it to SD for DVD format. |

Yeah I just bought a 5-port HDMI switch from monoprice.
How is your Fios DVR connected to your recorder, component or s-video? |

Do you need to have the FIOS DVR capability or can you just connect a DVD burner to the TV and record shows? I have a stand-alone burner, but not the DVR capability feture from VZ. I want to record sporting events, for instance. |

You would just have to record in real time since you aren't using a DVR. this is how I have my HDTiVos connected. I'm not positive about the FIOS HD STB since I've only used the HDMi output on mine, but on the HDTiVos those outputs are active when the HDMi out is active. |

OK did that and it works! A few small issues. I have the Samsung DVD/VCR combo recorder. S-video from the Fios DVR to the Samsung for video, red/white rca for audio.
Samsung is running HDMI out to a monoprice HDMI 5 port switch, then switch is running to 1 of 2 HDMI in ports on my Sharp aquos 46" TV (the Fios DVR is connected directly to the TV using the 1 other HDMI port).
Issues: • when watching some channels on the Samsung there is some flickering / a line across the very top of the screen (like only a few pixels high, a white line). Again only on some channels like Fox Soccer Channel • the line / flickering shows up if I play shows that were recorded on the DVR but only on the same channels (FSC, etc.) • most other channels look about the same as viewed directly with the Fios DVR • so far the samsung records Verbatim discs fine, both DVD+R and +RW, but would not record using Memorex, errored at 10% initializing every time, tested with several discs • I can record HD content onto DVDs, but it is obviously being downconverted going through the Samsung. Like I recorded the Spurs v. Blazers game that was on TNT HD & it worked, but the black bars / letterbox effect was on the top & bottom - overall it did not look terrible though • I also had to bypass my monoprice HDMI switch and plug the Samsung directly into the TV to be able to see some DVDs and to record onto a DVD+RW, other times I can leave it plugged into the monoprice switch the record DVD+R (maybe SD vs HD channels?) |
