The Doctor : Could be a problem with the router. if the USB modem syncs higher, then that points to the router. The reason why downloads are slow, is because your router has held a lower sync, it would have reduced your line IP profile down. this can take 5 days to raise again once you have a stable sync rate at the higher level.

ozstrike : I'm having some problems with my dad's ADSL connection, and I'm not sure what to do now.
Basically, it's been running fine up until the past couple of weeks, when it started running slowly and disconnecting randomly.
In the router status page, it normally syncs at between 5000 and 8000 kbps, but right now it's syncing at only 800kbps, and it's been as low as 256kbps. On a speedtest, I'm getting around 120kbps download speed, but it has been as low as 50kbps, while my upload is around 300kbps.

I've tried switching filters, and unplugging everything else. The router (Netgear DG834GT) is connected to the main socket.
If I try using the USB modem that came with the broadband package, it syncs at 5000k, but I still get terrible download speeds.

I've tried everything I can think of, and AOL support were no help (they basically told me to do everything I said I'd done). I'm pretty stuck now, and I have no idea what to do to try and get it fixed.

I'm guessing it may be a problem with the line, because it's only recently started?
