Just a comment to Rick

I hadn't used bit torrent for more than 6 months when I noticed my self being throttled, and when I did use it, I wasn't that heavy of a user.

Plain and simple, either you're lucky, or sandivine hasn't gotten to your area yet.

Also, comcast needs to frigging come out and admit the practice and stop being so frigging hush hush, it's just causing more talk around it by keeping it all hush hush.

You may or may not be aware of it, but this whole throttling issue might be caused by people who simply don't understand how this works.

If you have a 6000/384k connection..and I have a 6000/384k connection, and I download something from you..the BEST download speeds I can possibly get is whatever your UPLOAD speeds are...namely 384k.

I simply do not think that the bittorrent and other peer to peer issues are being caused by anything comcast is doing..(other than perhaps those already hitting 300 gig caps)..but rather..the whole technology involved.

You and others should understand that not only are you dealing with those limitations..but also limits that people put on uploading themselves which impact your speeds you can download from them. Not to mention the sheer number of people sometimes competing for various files.

Comcast doesn't have to impose limits on this. I think the technology itself is pretty fundamentally flawed enough to be doing a great job at it all by itself.

Anyways..as many times as Comcast has now come out and said they're not doing this and given the extent and detail they go into in the above memo..at this point personally I'm more than convinced that they're not doing this.
And, if people are being impacted..it's because of other issues..namely they are very high usage customers who are now on warnings or risking that.

And, if you or I do experience problems as light to moderate users..it's simply due to the technology itself or other issues.

The two shouldn't be confused..as they are here apparently.

You SERIOUSLY think that Sandvine is not in effect and Comcast is causing forged packets to its users?

Wow man..If thats the case..Your more blind than i thought.

As far as Torrents being (flawed) is just none sense talk, I see torrents becoming even more popular now that its not just for the l33t geeky type folk. If you seriously think the technology in torrents is flawed, id like to know how.

Hell I'm using utorrent right now without any tricks besides whats in the program itself so i can actually seed back to a good ratio because CC decides they want to forge my packets without my knowledge and then lie to its customers or change the story up BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING IS WRONG.

I'm curious. What exactly are you "seeding back"?
Is it copyrighted material in any way?

If so, it would be rather hypocritical of you to blame/accuse or whatever comcast of anything if what you yourself are doing is WRONG..and STEALING material you didn't pay for.

Just a thought.

But with bittorrent, the more people that are trying to get the file, the better it tends to perform. If there is only 1 person seeding and 20 leeching, I still get the parts of the file I dont have from the people who have that part but not the whole file.

Granted that when only one person has the file and everyone else only has the parts you already have, it goes slower.

And when a few non-tech centric sites start reporting that Comcast is in fact throttling BT, wont you at least consider that you may be wrong about what the company is doing? Not saying that thier are right, you are wrong, go DIAF n00b!!!111 We all know the news isnt always correct with the facts, so they may be wrong, but they are right a lot of the time too. Just something to consider.

Copyrighted material =/= illegal to trade. (Pretty much any Linux distribution comes to mind, plus services like Joost.)

The whole "YOUR STEALING!!!!" argument to deflect criticism from underperforming infrastructure is already a strawman and going only to ring increasingly hollow as time goes by.

As a brand new Comcast customer, all my BitTorrent traffic has been blocked. I downloaded, and was unable to seed the Ubuntu ISO that was just downloaded off their site.

The unfortunate thing with BitTorrent is that when you don't upload, you are (a) not allowed to download or (b) given the lowest priority in the queue to download.

On my old 1.5MB DSL, it took 10 minutes to download the ISO via BT, on Comcast, it took > 30 minutes.

Absolutely I would consider I was wrong. Except for the fact that since that time however, the company has now come out and stated emphatically that they are not doing this.

And, they're saying it in not only a talking points memo to employees..but even to the associated press.

Given all that, I simply am now accepting that at face value as their response to this matter. While I know that the conspiracy theory crowd likes to take virtually anything to a higher level than that..the fact of the matter is that the next level would be that comcast is outright lying about this matter. And, I can't think of any scenario where that would benefit them to do so..nor any where they would really think they could ever even get away with something like that.

And so, again..I'm left with the fact that
a)they have responded to this and
b)have done so multiple times and
c)have emphatically denied doing this.

And, to that I will add
d)my service works great
e)I couldn't be more happy with them and
f)that is all the PERSONAL proof I need that whatever might be occurring..it's not directed towards users such as myself who are not

a)copyright stealing bandwidth hogs.

Is there something going on for THAT group of people?

You know..there just might be.

As for what it might be..I haven't a clue. But i'd suspect it's intended on preserving and protecting the network for the 95% of we users who aren't out to ruin it and take all the bandwidth for ourselves.

Isn't it rather ironic that the vast MINORITY who are crying out about this just love to cite what companies do or don't do as being Wrong..but yet their very activities themselves are as wrong as can be?

FWIW..I DO think that this minority is having their service impacted...and..shaped if you will.
I don't think it's program specific..but rather bandwidth consumption specific.
I think that might very well explain why the screaming minority crowd is having some problems...while the rest of us aren't.

I don't knowthat for a fact..but just reading Comcasts statements on this says clearly they are going to protect their network from abusers...for the rest of us.

And, what I say to that is..good for them.

Please..keep it up.

95% of the rest of us will appreciate it very much..thank you.

Yes, but in some cases depending on the data you're transferring, you could be engaged in copyright infringement. BUT, this is not a criminal offense. They'd have to sue you in civil court.

I'm having a hard time believing that you're so naive that you're willing to believe whatever they tell you. If so, I hear that Saddam was responsible for 9/11 and that FEMA had a 'press' conference this week. Corporations and our government lie to us all the time. They call it 'spin,' but most of us recognize these statements as the lies that they are. (See - they even lie about what they call them.)

Anyhow, what you don't seem to be grasping here is that people aren't looking at this memo as proof that Comcast interferes with bit-torrent traffic - that has already been proven by the presence of these forged RESET packets - people are up in arms about this because despite the proof (in the form of the presence of the RESET packets) this memo is 'spinning' (see definition above) the facts to avoid the issue.

I'll state that I fully agree that networks need management. However I find Comcast's method of management abhorrent (impersonating user's packets, and then lying about it). Hopefully other customers will agree and vote with their wallets, and force Comcast to change their practices with the only stimulus that a corporation like Comcast knows how to react to - the bottom line.
