MarthaG : I really am happy with the Franklin CDU550. I have been getting about 500 down and 100 upload speeds. I had HughesNet for years but the last year it went down hill and I finally went on dial up until I found out I could get Alltel Axcess. I don't know how to make it go faster but I find it is as fast as my computer was while using HughesNet when it was a good service. It's great that rain doesn't cause trouble like it did on satellite. If we have high winds I will disconnect now and then but I am talking really high winds for around where I live. I have no regrets. I downloaded a concert and worried that I would get a letter or something saying I used too much but I didn't. I won't abuse downloading but I do like to watch Youtube like most people do.

blonderella : I see this post is from a month ago, but I'll post my question anyway and see where it goes...I also have a CDU 550...am actually at the end of the trial period tomorrow I believe...it's a keeper though...buh-bye Hughes! *happy dancing* :D

anyway, I average about 50-60 KB/sec download pretty consistently with Alltel...from what I'm hearing from others, that seems very slow in comparison...I have a direct line of site to the tower, which is about 1 mile away as the crow flies, but we do live in a mobile home with metal siding...I'm wondering if this could be the reason my speeds seem quite a bit slower than others, or maybe there are some tweaks I need to perform? I don't even know where to start on that, I'm pretty ignorant about this...I'm sure if I tried to do something on my own, I'd royally mess up my settings...

also, this last couple of days it will work great for a long period, then all of a sudden disconnect, and sometimes I have to "reconnect" anywhere from 1 time to a dozen times until it connects and stays connected...I don't mind having to reconnect every once in a while, but if there's some kind of issue I'd like to resolve it...

I have EVDO 1x Digital Data...I checked my RSSI as stated above, and it shows -87 dBm, whatever that means...

any pointers or advice about trying to get my speeds up just a little? I usually got around 120 down on Hughes, but I would sacrifice the speed for the more stable service with Alltel if absolutely necessary...even though Hughes might have been faster on downloads (uploads were like 1K, IF it worked), you get a cloud in the sky and the service goes kerplunk...we had rain one day here, and Hughes did it's usual degraded or non functioning service, but Alltel surfed on without a hitch...

thanks for any tips!!
--
DW7000, G3C-PRIMARY 95West, Transponder 1360, Gateway 66.82.12.54, XP SP2, hub-3 computers, Firefox, sometimes IE6....

MarthaG : Thank you all for the comments. I am so gun shy after this last year on HughesNet since FAP that I guess I worry too much. I had a problem recently and I thought I knew it was too good to be true. Something went down in a big area in Ohio and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I called tec support and they are only in during working hours so I was off line for a long time. When I got in touch with tec during business hours they told me about the problem and they were working on it and then it came back on. I really like the people I talked to at Alltel. I must be online for my volunteer work so I added an isp connection in case it happens again. Now I won't worry so much. I really like Alltel Access and am so glad I was able to get it. Thanks again.

I was only fapped one time and it was caused by a virus that I found after the fact and removed it. I minded the worry about getting slowed down to a crawl that I barely did anything but look at my usage page. I hope they don't do that on Alltel in the future because the Internet is only going to get bigger. I hope that they understand that as demand grows the need to expand will matter.
hdman : OK, you have it plugged directly into your PC which is pretty normal. EVDO is simply one of those things that you either have access to, or not. You happy to one of the lucky ones who can get it. I was on WildBlue for 2 years, and I have been on Alltel's EVDO for a month now.

As far as the "unlimited" goes, I would not hold my breath on that one. My guess is that a few people will DL a few GB's per day and then we will see a policy. Also, on busy towers, Alltel is shutting down the data stream every 12 hours, so the data card hangs if it has been connected that long. No big deal.

I do like Alltel's service compared to satellite!

HDMan

MarthaG : Thank you hdman for the response. Here is a link to what I am using. I was on Hughesnet since 2001 and couldn't take it anymore and went back on dial up until I found that Alltel offered the Franklin Wireless CDU550 and I could plug it into a USB port and I have one on the front of my computer and it brings in a stronger signal in the front then in the back. It's been a couple more days and it hasn't done one thing wrong. I am not used to no trouble. I am using a 4 year old Windows XP that I thought was going to crash because of all the noise it made while on HughesNet but now it is running very quiet. The speed tests aren't big like I got on HughesNet but it is faster and I don't understand why but performance is what tells me how good something is not speed tests. I am now getting 3 and 4 bars and connecting at 70 to 78 was the highest but often 74. I can hold a connection for hours without disconnecting. This is very new in south east Ohio where I live and it really is wonderful so far. No Fap policy either. I asked everyone I talked to at Alltel about limited bandwidth and they said they have no such policy.

»wsf1.shopalltel.com/product/prod···=CDU-550

anon : I hope this is the correct forum but after many years with HughesNet I turned it off and now am using Alltel to connect my desktop to the Net. This is my 3rd day and I am very pleased with it so far. I have 14 days to return it but so far it looks like a keeper. I am connecting with a Franklin CDU550. No external antenna either just the little one that sticks out of the modem if that is what it's called. I have most times 3 to 4 bars and average between 61 and 70 percent signal strength. I have stayed connected for as long as 4 hours without needing to reconnect. I'd really like to hear how others that are using this device are doing. Thanks in advance.

(merged out of intro post, fixed title)
