[Speed Problem] Slow connection through router

Hello all,

I've had BellSouth (ATT) FastAccess 6.0 for about 3 months now. Everything has been perfect until sometime this week I noticed my web connection had slowed down to a crawl. I hit the usual speed test sites (speakeasy, speed.fastaccess) and saw that my speeds were under 1Mbs when I typically get a solid 6Mbps. Nothing internally had changed on my network at this point.

After a couple days of troubleshooting I have determined my speed and latency issues (typical ping are 600ms+ currently) go away when I remove the router (Belkin N)out of the equation and I connect directly to the DSL modem. I thought this was rather odd since nothing in my environment has changed. To further add to the fun, I put in my old Linksys to act as a router and it had the same performance issues that my Belkin had. I even switched the control of PPoE between DSL modem and the router(s) to no avail.

The other thing that strikes me as odd, I run a traceroute directly from the DSL modem and get high latency times when one of my routers is attached and perfect ping times when a router is not. If it were an actual router issue, the traceroute latency would be consistent in either configuration, correct? That traceroute leaves the modem and does not pass through my internal router. Same exact route taken in regardless of router hooked up or not.

I also had a technician out today to look at everything. Very nice guy, set me up with a whole house filter and whatnot. Hooked his DSL modem/router(combo unit) and everything was perfect of course.

I've tried everything I can think of (played with MTU settings on router as well). I still need to get a call in with Belkin to see if they have any thoughts. I've checked every cable, route(s), tried with multiple systems, OSes, etc. At this point my paranoia is starting to get the best of me and I'm thinking they are purposely crippling my speed when connected through my own router. I know, it sounds crazy.

Anyone have any thoughts??? This is in the Cumming, GA area, off of Bethelview Rd (Hwy 141).

1 edit
Just thought I would add some traceroute data. Everything appears fine within my network. Not sure if anyone could possibly explain the results below. The high latency does not occur until it leaves the DSL modem.

**EDIT: The other thing I wanted to mention (after running a network trace utility all night) is I get "normal" speeds about every 10-12 minutes in roughly 10-20 pings increments. I've managed to time it just right during these "normal" periods and get a full 6Mbps on the speed tests. It immediately drops to the sub 1Mbps speeds however.
