Why's this a debate about Arkansas? Do you have something against farmers? Something against truckers? Have you considered that a lower per-capita income may be relative to the cost of living there?
It's definitely inexpensive to live in AR, that much is true. For my annual income I could have a mansion. That same income is barely getting through a two bedroom apartment here in CA.

I remember when I was somewhat younger and I went out there, they had just heard of PlayStation...when I was already on PlayStation 2.

I want a fixed car phone, or a bag phone...my dad has one STILL in his Nissan. Never uses it, but it's there and yes, I've found them to be way better and more useful than the portable counterparts.

Not only do we have cell phones, we know how to fill out a ballot and count it afterwards.

No offense, but they likely have those phones because they fit their needs. Not everyone needs or wants color screens, cameras, MP3 ringtones, and Internet access.

So the best way to get them to buy new phones is to offer them phones that have only the features they want.
Umm I'm a city boy and the only thing I want is the very phone you describe because IMHO they seem to work far better.
Maybe those farmers aren't so dumb after all!

yeah, envy is a terrible problem. Arkansas, home of the world's largest retailer, world's largest protein producer (Tyson) and the world's largest trucking company (JB Hunt). Nevermind the fact that it is home to the company with the largest cell coverage area.
In other words, it has WalMart, Chicken farmers, and a lot of truckers. Arkansas is one of the poorest states (»www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0104652.html).

Ross Perot said of Bill Clinton and Arkansas, "It's just a bunch of chicken farmers."

Bill Maher: "Arkansas has newspapers?"

The OG phones were a full 3 watts. The links are above or below for the current models of bags.

MY first phone was a bag phone. Although large it was the best phone I ever owned. Signal in the middle of nowhere with a full signal. If I am not mistaken the new phones are .5W and not 1w.

What the hell did I say in my post that was incorrect? The point I was trying to get across is that until Alltel meets E911 standards (E911 capable phones), they are going to be denied USF monies.

EDIT-Not sure if you were replying to me or the other dude.

I don't think you know how this tech works.

The old phones work, the new ones do not. Those of us lucky to live in cities with good 3G coverage from 4 or 5 carriers are in the minority. Go get lost in a National Park sometime... you'll wish you had an analog phone from Alltel.

Arkansas has AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and Alltel 3G coverage. Last I heard, only Alltel had 3rd Generation wireless speeds in NW-FL.

OH, and Arkansas actually has a city.. which NW FL does NOT.

Not only do we have cellphones we have much better coverage than there is in the rural backwoods of North Florida where your lucky to get a signal anywhere outside of Pensacola, Tallahassee or Jacksonville. So before you go bashing other places you should look around at the backwards ass, redneck, trashy area of the country you live in

I don't think they use these phones because they don't want to upgrade. They use them because they don't want to downgrade. I think the bagphones are capable of putting out 3W while a handheld phone isn't even 1W. I know we used to be in a fringe coverage area and the bagphone was the only thing that worked. I'm sure there are still areas a bagphone would work and my little handheld wouldn't. In farming, time lost is money lost, so having a reliable cell phone is worth it. I'd be willing to bet alot of them also have a regular cordless cellular phone, too. When Nextel and Centennial put up towers in our area, we got away from the bagphones. We now get Sprint, Alltel, Centennial, AT&T, and Nextel coverage.

Now if we can rid the farmers of their 10-15 year old cell phones.
What are you, some city boy that thinks he's better?
No, not at all. The reasoning behind the E-911 debacle is the old analog phones. When I walk through the parking lot of stores around here you still see OLD bag phones sitting on seats. I realize switching to a newer technology is not always the easiest thing to do, but Alltel is the last network to allow these phones on their network. This past summer I saw a man around here at walmart talking on a Micro-Tac or equivalent. That does not make sense.

EDIT- Our county is known as the "Wheat Capitol of the World" It is many times been the leading wheat producer per capita of the nation. So stick the city boy comment somewhere else.
