I think when Intel signed on was when Wimax became a sure thing. Cisco joining in is just jumping on the bandwagon. They were worried they were going to be left behind.

I know intel wants to put wimax chips on the motherboard.

Does anyone know if everyone will be able to buy wimax routers or is it just going to be restricted for max profit and controllability?
Like they could just restrict it to oem partners and ISP's with huge payments for license/lease and just sell us recievers.

Re: WiMax

I think it all depends on what frequencies Wimax will operate in.(?)
I doubt ordinary consumers will be able to get the more powerful transmitters though.

Interesting fact about Cisco, They own Scientific Atlanta, the major manufacturer of Cable TV plant equipment.

Imagine a WiMAX node hanging every 100 feet from your local cable TV plant wiring.

A partnership with any cable operator might see WiMax coverage literally pop up overnight, with minimal investment, or waiting for years to get towers approved.

Someone questioned a Sprint /Comcast merger or acquisition before, and that would put WiMax on the map everywhere.

Comcast has the cable plant, and Sprint has gobs of excess spectrum for WiMax deployment.

This could really get interesting.
