| The government has a vested interest...
In maintaining an open and free(as in freedom) Internet, since it paid for a lot of it, especially in the devlopmental phase, with our tax dollars and with many tax incentives and much "looking the other way". Comcast has been caught with the meat in their mouth and lying about it. Look over at "The Consumerist" for the latest on that. It has a right and obligation to step in.
You and I have regulations we live with every day. They are called "laws". They stop or mitigate the effects of behaviors deemed bad for wider society. Even Adam Smith, ubergod of capitalism called for regulated capitalism, to mitigate the baser urges of greed and predation.
Why some feel that a capitalist business system, unfettered by any regulation and government oversight would be good is beyond me. Wait. No it's not. It's because they are greedheads. |

There are plenty of countries where the govt. will tell you what you can do, when you can do it, what you will earn and what you can spend it on (what little you have left).
ANY law regulating free enterprise will stifle free enterprise to the point the investment in such will end. Any such laws regulating companies who are conducting a legal business should be accompanied by a check reimbursing said company for every dollar they have spent building that business. To date, if the US govt. had to reimburse every ISP for their cost in taking the internet from a .edu/.gov/.mil pipe to a gobal one where, yes even you, have access would bankrupt it. |

1 edit | Our country was NOT founded on the principles of unrestricted capitalism... looks like someone has no clue about our country's past. Laws that protect consumers are not "stifling" anyone here... please explain how a law making it illegal to censor internet transmissions is "stifling"...
Corporations exist to make money.... as much money as possible, in whatever way possible. Whether that be at the expense of the public or not. laws are necessary to even the playing field and keep the public safe. While I agree, sometimes the government oversteps their boundaries, it is much less frequent than the United States hating free marketers would lead people to believe. The "theory" of free market might be a nice one, but its reality is much different. In reality, Verizon, AT&T and others actively seek to control and limit technological advances and competition to keep their profits at a maximum. Look at other countries and compare our internet and technological advances to theirs. You'll see that while once we were a leader in both these areas, now we trail behind many other countries- thanks in great part to the major corporations that have a stranglehold on our government. |

While Boober121 left me nothing to add, I must say, you really lost the argument with the "MOVE!". Try to remember that healthy democracies and economies flourish where there is a multitude of ideas that compete in the arena of discussion. An attitude like yours is an attitude of totalitarianism, a system that cannot tolerate competition in the arena of ideas and discussion.
Besides, I was born here and my direct ancestors came here in the late 1600's. I think I'll stay, if only to tick off people like you. |

| reply to TraumaJunkie I don't know what country you live in but the US government already regulates all kinds of businesses. As a truck driver they pretty much regulate everything I do while working and I would hate to live in this country if they didn't. They regulate all business with laws such as the minimum wage and with safety regulations and rules such as anti-discrimination. Its funny how people like you preach about what this country is built on and when people disagree you tell them to leave. This ignores the most important principle this country was built on, freedom of speech. -- Patriots always speak of dying for their country never killing for it. Bertrand Russell
