Re: [ Bright House] Orlando Area - Slow Download Speeds on Xbox I am having this same problem in Deltona. I have been having it for a little over a month now. |
|
 | Well its back to SLOW ASS downloads on Xbox Live after 3 days of back to regular speed. Brighthouse must be regulating the speed. Does anyone know how XBL traffic is routed so we can diagnose the issue for Brighthouse? |
|
 | reply to Dkwhite Over 20 min to download a 99MB trailer from Xbox Live, but I still test at close to 10mb on normal internet. |

1 edit | reply to Winter Park I assure you that NOBODY is checking that address!
Don't hope a company is going to provide you service.
Demand it politely! Watch what happens....
To everyone else with XBOX live issues....
Are you tracing the route from you XBOX or from somewhere else on your LAN?
You will get no where talking to brighthouse about this issue if you get the wrong tech. They have been trying to verify that you hit their router and blame the rest of the problem on "The Internet"
Meanwhile they have major backbones to other major backbones and from time to time they have to reassign IP blocks due to funky gremlins in their network. |
|
 | Still painfully slow on Xbox Live. How can I get near 10mb speeds on regular internet and Xbox Live be slow as molasses? |

 | reply to Dkwhite Just called BHN again about this issue. This time I got a Tech named Chris who said he actually experiences the same slowness on Xbox Live with respect to downloads of movie files, games, demos, etc. Like me (and others) the regular internet is fine.
He spoke to a supervisor who gave the standard answer, that BHN is not responsible for slowdowns "one you leave our network". I told him that answer is BS because others have the problem (including Chris) and there are not massive reports of Xbox Live slowdowns on other ISPs.
The bottom line is we need as many people as possible to call BHN and report this Xbox Live slowdown issue. |

 | reply to Dkwhite I have this problem as well but I have figured out the cause of the issue and have an idea on how to solve it- but I need the help of someone who knows more about IP addresses than I do.
After a nice talk with Road Runner customer support, we found out that there is maintenance on the Central Florida network. The interesting thing is that if you go to www.speedtest.net and test your internet speed on the ORLANDO server, your speed will suck (my download was at 400 kb/s when it should be at around 10,000 kb/s). If you test your internet speed on a different server, such as the ATLANTA server, your speeds will be much faster and read at about what they are supposed to.
So, here's the problem- your Xbox 360 is connecting to Microsoft servers based in Orlando and you're getting the shitty speeds. That's why games like Halo 3 still work since you're connecting to a "host." What we need to do is to trick our Xbox into connecting to a server that isn't in Central Florida. The guys at 1-800-4my-xbox said that this was possible, but that I'd need to know the IP address. This is where they lost me- how do I find out /make up an IP address that is for somewhere like Atlanta?
I don't know a whole lot about networking, so this theory could be totally wrong. But, I'd like to try it. If anyone knows how to find a new IP address, please let me know and I'll give it a shot. I'll take a long shot over 400 kb/s any day. Thanks |

 | reply to Dkwhite I have had the same issues and no time to research until now. I did a couple of tests which led me to try something. So far that something has improved everything to where it was before or better. You need to change your DNS server IP addresses. This can be done on your router if you use one, your PC if it is directly connected to the internet, or on any other internet sharing/routing device you may be using.
There are one of two reasons why this is working. 1.)RR DNS is hosed up. 2.)There is another underlying networking problem between RR and/or Xbox Live Servers in the Orlando area and the new DNS server entries are causing you to use Xbox Live Servers in another city.
Change your DNS server addresses to 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 And remove any other DNS addresses listed. You may need to change DNS from automatic to manual to be able to enter these addresses.
If you are somewhat computer savvy, this site does a pretty good job of telling you what needs to be done. »www.opendns.com/start
If you need a little extra guidance, you are probably using a store bought or RR supplied router and the manufacturer technical support should be able to help.
Please let me know if this also resolves your problems.
Good Luck! |

 | I tried changing the DNS servers and it fixes the Orlando speed test at Speedtest.net (well it goes from 400kbps to 2900kbps) but it doesn't fix the slow Xbox Live downloads. |
|
 | reply to Dkwhite I did reset my cable modem and router after the DNS changes. Try that after you complete the changes and let me know. I have a family member that was having the same problem, he rents a lot of movies through XBL. His downloads were taking 2-3 hours and now it takes two days. I just made the changes for him and he is going to try downloading some stuff when he gets home tonight. I'll let you know if his works or not. |

OvrQualifiedSlightly Ahead Of TimePremium join:2002-01-27 Winter Park, FL | reply to Dkwhite I've been seeing this with some of my clients lately. It looks like a peering problem with Level3. Based on traceroutes that I have done, it appears, so far, that any request that needs to travel through the Level3 peering point slows down dramatically, while any request traveling through other peering points (ATDN, ATT, etc). download.microsoft.com for example, traces through Level3 Orlando peer and downloads rather slowly (48 KB/sec or so). While supportdownload.apple.com, which is an Akamai-hosted server on the Atlanta RR backbone is nice and quick at over 600KB/sec. So, it looks like a area-wide routing problem...I'm fairly sure the engineers are aware of it, and the maintenance might very well have something to do with it. -- The enemy of my enemy is my WHAT?! |
|
 | reply to Dkwhite Are you still experiencing these slow downs? |
|
 | reply to Problem Solved Well, now I can't even get fast speeds on SpeedTest through the Orlando server with the DNS changes. I've rebooted both my router and my modem multiple times. |
|
 | reply to Dkwhite The changes I made for my family member's PC also worked for his XBL problems. He was able to get a 1.2 gig game demo in 20 minutes after the changes.
I will be interested to hear if anybody else has luck with this.
FlashBurn, I am not sure why you are still having problems. Even though it has only fixed 2 instances it seems as if it works great. I did use the Speedtest website and I get poor speed from FDN in Jacksonville/Tampa. I ran the test in San Fransisco and got great results. Try that and then the Speakeasy speed test and let us know. Try downloading a 1.2 gig game demo that is under new releases and let us know how long that takes. |

Bogie join:2007-12-29 Apopka, FL | reply to Dkwhite After my son made the changes I was able to download a 7.3 GB movie this morning from Live in 2hr & 5m. Last weekend it took 2 days to download a 5.2 GB movie. Working great for me finally. I have noticed that other computers in the house have slow internet speed while the XBox is downloading, this I can live with. I hope others have the same results, good luck. |

In relative terms life is shorter than the blink of an eye. Remember that each and every day because in the end it's not about what you've done but how you've lived.

 | reply to Dkwhite Okay, after trying a download again after making the DNS changes it definitely did seem to speed things up. I was 86% done downloading a 1.2gb demo after only about 45 minutes, much better than the 12+ hours it normally was taking. |
