There might be another explanation.. Microsoft evilness.

M$ built into XP and Vista, a custom DNS client.

I would not be surprised if one of the M$ updates changed something to give the evil empire some sort of advantage. Perhaps one of those stealth updates??

It takes a bit of effort to shut it off.
Startup->Control panel->Administrative tools->Services.
Disable DNS client startup and stop the existing service.

Once the DNS client service is shutdown, DNS resolution behaves like a typical WinXXXX/UNIX system.

Not Microsoft - I have the same problem on multiple Mac OSX machines.

Google disappears in the late evening - and yes - I do have Comcast.
