Running servers is against the TOS of Comcast. Why people continually do what is clearly banned and then complain about whatever might result from it is way beyond my comprehension.
Undoubtedly..the user is also someone downloading/uploading 400 gigs a month and ruining the service for the rest of those in their neighborhood as well.
All the while, i'm sure they're complaining about it all..and the fact they are even having to pay 42.95 a month for the service. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Roadrunner Rick is now Comcastic! |

 | I think the general consensus here is: TOS? Screw it! I paid for the service, so I'm gonna use it. Comcast shouldn't be paying attention to *what* a customer is doing, just *how much* is being done. If a customer exceeds their "allotment" of bandwidth, then just cut 'em off at the knees: "Thanks for your business... please come back next month ".
If you're really using "too much" (whatever that is), than *all* of your packets should be laid waste to. (But only if the network is at or near 100% utilization.) |

But it all boils down the poorly advertised "Unlimited Connection". This will certainly be the crutch most abusers will resort to. "It's ours for the taking, so why can't we take all of it?" Sheesh

You are not even addressing the point of the article here. Everytime something is mentioned about Comcast you jump on the "servers are not allowed, they must be DL'ing pirated material, they MUST be high volume users" etc. It's just getting old.
If you are going to make such generalizations about people, I guess I would have to make the generalization that with all of your pro-Comcast rhetoric, you undoubtedly work for Comcast in some capacity.

| reply to Rick What's more retarded is that these TOS's are allowed to have terms in it that ban you from running servers.

See, that's one of the things that's changed. These companies that have too little competition have adopted the idea "These people are lucky to have us provide our service to them. We can dictate the terms and prices to them."
Gone are the days where they are trying to provide you with what you want as an incentive to win/keep your business. Now they tell you how it's going to be, and how you're going to like it.

In other news: Comcast customer are unable to reach Google and Google-related sites. Back to you, Rick. Perhaps the fact that they're running a server against the TOS of their customer agreement with comcast has their service being impacted overall? Clearly, Comcast has stated that those abusing the network are going to have to deal with the consequences of that and they have every right to preserve and protect the network for all the rest of us from this type of abuse.
My post is very much on topic in that the article states clearly that that is what they are doing. And, I think we're all grown adults here (hopefully)..and understand that this use isn't for trading linux files.
It's these people who are saturating these nodes..saturating the ul bandwidth..and soaking up 300 and more gigs per month on a residential connection.
And, as comcast stated in their press releases..they reserve the right to use whatever tools their are at their disposal to counteract this type of abuse.
Is that what is going on? You know..I have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER.
But I do think that those who create these problems..break the terms of their agreement..and then run around complaining about it have quite frankly..lost their rights to complain.
And..they deserve the consequences that result from their own actions.
Honestly, I think the excuses from the crowd doing this are getting pretty lame. We all know what bit torrent is used for. And we all know that not only is it against Comcasts TOS..but it's also against the law. And, for those who'd also like to compare running THAT kind of server with someone perhaps just doing some gaming is really doing everyone an injustice who does use the service for reasonable purposes.
Comcast isn't out to deny we customers fair use..nor even heavy use. I myself certainly fall towards the latter category. And I have no problems whatsoever.
Who they are after apparently is those who far exceed even that. Who impact this service and take it down for those in their area who want to enjoy it as well.
And, the 95% of us who fall into that category frankly are sick and tired of the lame excuses..and abuse suffered at the hands of this crowd.
And will speak out against it. As we should.
And, if the 5% don't like it..I really don't know what to say except obviously they'll have to deal with the consequences of it. They should upgrade their connections to business class..or split their time using a dsl service as well. They do have other options.
They don't want to pay for it...at least many of them. They want us to pay for it.

| reply to Rick Rick, you are completely ignoring the fact that people in the original topic and on this site stated that they were not using a torrent. That would throw your theory out the window....
The original topic was not about torrenting, and you go off yet again about servers, saturating nodes, TOS's etc. But ignore the fact that it is happening to non-torrent users.
You summed it up best by saying- "Is that what is going on? You know..I have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER." -- "A religious war is like children fighting over who has the strongest imaginary friend."

If there's someone using 400 GB of pirated a month, GO AFTER THEM, simple enough. Leave the nominal & law abiding citizens alone.
Hell, I know a guy that downloads hundreds of GBs in MP3s and AVIs...does that mean I can lump-sum bastardize those files too?
said by Rick:All the while, i'm sure they're complaining about it all..and the fact they are even having to pay 42.95 a month for the service. Given that the Comcast's TOS can damn well limit any and all areas of the internet, I'd say they're getting ripped. $40+ bucks for a gimped version of the internet is highly overpriced. |

Same thing can be said about just every thread/topic on this site. Mention anything cable or sometimes even broadband, and everyone jumps in the site with both feet screaming "Comcast killed my cat!"
You can have a thread that says "Network Solutions to mess with DNS" and then everyone will jump in and tell us 1000 stories about how comcast sucks.
