Backup Your Data NOW!

Just a friendly reminder to backup your data.

If you:
•Can't remember when your last data backup was...
•Can't remember where you PUT your backed up data (probably a security problem with this as well)...
•Don't know HOW to backup your data...

Then you probably need to do it.

I worked on 4 PCs for friends this week; 3 had data recovered, 1 didn't (lost years worth of work).
Even us security gurus and PC techs can have crap happen in the most inopportune times as well!

SO, to recap: Just a friendly reminder to backup your data.

Guilty!

I do remember when and were, but the when was way to long ago (October 12). Going to do a quick data backup TODAY.

I fixed a friend's computer last Monday. His son 8000 miles away said it was the video card and hard drive. So he bought a new video card, and new hard drive and new DVD-ROM called me up. Backups, what's that he says. Oh Well, the good news was it was not the hard drive. I was the power supply!

Excellent idea! I can blast the "carbon" out of my burners too! plus I'll have some up-to-date back-up CD's and DVD's.

Also, don't be lulled into a false sense of security if you have RAID0 or RAID5 (hardware or software). I have on more than one occasion seen a controller glitch or voltage surge wipe out multiple RAID devices. I have also on more than one occasion seen a second RAID device die while waiting for the first defective device to be replaced and synchronized.

For anyone who for whatever reason does not own a drive copy program you can take a look at the freeware verson of XXCLONE:

the freeware has a few limitations but will copy a complete harddrive.....or so I am led to understand......read the info well.....decide for yourself.

Excellent .. thanks.

For marshaling all the files to my "burn" directories, for backup to dvds .. I use SyncBack SE. It also "syncs" file backup from my primary, 3 partition, drive to 3 other drives .. one of which is an external USB. All operations are on full nightly "auto".

For imaging, I too have been using Acronis .. though I've been testing, and am now very happy with, a free imaging program called DriveImage XML ( »www.runtime.org/dixml.htm ) .. it's excellent. They also provide a plugin for use with a BartPE disk, which I suggest anyone using imaging software should also create. Images are alternately saved to the two, non-system, internals and the external.

All this is great if I don't have a fire. I'm presently (still) investigating on-line storage possibilities. About narrowed down to Carbonite or Mosey, I think .. might?

Too, instead, maybe I'll just take some dvd's to work for storage there. Off-site's the key .. right?

Never have and never will back up stuff on a stupid computer. What, did you think it would last forever or something? Total waste of space on any type medium. With the internet as fast as it is now a days, it's nothing to restore whatever is necessary, except for personal stuff that you were goofy enough to save ONLY on your computer!

That makes no sense Cork, seeing as thought most stuff people want to keep IS DIGITAL. Broadband also has nothing to do with it, its still TIME. How would you suggest people back up THOUSANDS of songs, movies, photos that are only digital.

You forget peoples personal stuff can fill hard drives fast. I have about 300gigs or more of stuff I would hate to lose.

Also I bet you would love it if the bank calls you up and says "no big deal or anything, but we decided not to backup anything anymore".

One other thing to remember, especially with the fires in Cali. Having a backup is great, but if it's in your house, and your house gets wiped out by a disaster, it doesn't do much good. I have been using »www.Carbonite.com to back my stuff up online. $50/year for unlimited space. It's encrypted, so I feel safe that nobody will see it. Could it get hacked? Probably, yes. Will it? Probably not unless I win the lottery.

I have thousands of digital family photos that I don't want to lose. This was my solution.

Another Update

I think »www.grc.com did a report about encrypting your CDs/DVDs with TrueCrypt so that the CDs/DVDs would just report erroneous data if not unencrypted before using them.

This technique would probably be good for folks that make backups on media that would be likely to give this media to family/friends for "off site" storage.
