Does anybody know of a (preferable free) program that does backups in the background that can send to my space on my website? I have a host with a ton of space and transfer available, it would be nice to be able to use this space using a small client program that can be configured to do this.

You understood what I meant, and I couldn't believe that from Carbonite either. However, that is what my friend read somewhere on the site in the small print. It sounds totally weird, but without knowing for sure, I am only repeating what I was told. If anyone knows differently for sure, I would love to know it.

This is a topic that a friend of mine and I have been discussing of late and Carbonite was the original choice. Then we found that one could only restored 1X which could be a big problem if being used for a business and/or needed more often for whatever the reason.
Well, I must not understand what you mean then. Because, I cannot imagine that Carbonite would limit people to only a single occasion/occurrence of being able to re-acquire/download their own data.

edit: I apologize, I intended to cover this topic in my prior post.

Thank you so much. This is a topic that a friend of mine and I have been discussing of late and Carbonite was the original choice. Then we found that one could only restored 1X which could be a big problem if being used for a business and/or needed more often for whatever the reason. I recommended this person to look at Jungle Disk as a new possibility this AM but then thought I may have been in error for having done so. I will now forward your further info to them to go along with the original email I sent.

If one's business system crashes and there is a need to upload/restore info stored, does JungleDisk allow this and if so, how many times...just once or multiples?
Hi jaykaykay,

Usage of Amazon S3, or any other such online service, wouldn't entail "system" backup (meaning the partition/HD containing the OS .. though it could). It, instead, allows very secure (especially in Amazon S3's case .. not saying others aren't as secure, but Amazon's setup impressed me) backup at a file/folder level.

Any information one deemed important enough to backup can be "restored"/retrieved/downloaded from the backup service, back onto the storers (or any other that was allowed, via the multiple access passwords. Files, if desired, can be "shared" in this manner amongst a group of people) computer as many times as is required by the storer. The number of times you can access your information stored online is completely unlimited, though Amazon S3 does charge for transfer bandwidth. Here's their pricing:

United States
Storage
$0.15 per GB-Month of storage used

Data Transfer
$0.10 per GB - all data transfer in
$0.18 per GB - first 10 TB / month data transfer out
$0.16 per GB - next 40 TB / month data transfer out
$0.13 per GB - data transfer out / month over 50 TB

Requests
$0.01 per 1,000 PUT or LIST requests
$0.01 per 10,000 GET and all other requests*
* No charge for delete requests

Amazon S3, certainly as presently configured, isn't itself very user friendly (speaking access/manipulation), not really targeting, primarily, the Home PC backup market (they function to fry much larger, corporate, fish).

Jungle Disk, filling the need for easily manipulated access software, is a business enterprise arising from this need for S3 access! Jungle Disk's creators (though I don't exactly know their back-grounds) aren't "working for" Amazon. Jungle Disk is a private business, aside from Amazon, that still works very closely with Amazon, that provides this S3 interface.

It says that S3 is accessible via any WEBDave capable app .. Jungle Disk is one such app that is programmed to facilitate S3 access.

Have I explained this clearly, or is it confusing?

Jungle Disk has a one-time purchase price of $20 .. and, is a lifetime license w/unlimited access to all future updates/upgrades.

I chose S3 because of it's "for use" pricing. With others I was considering, like Carbonite and others, they charge a flat, monthly or yearly, amount for unlimited storage. In Carbonites case it's $50 a year for unlimited. Well, that sounds great and all, but my data I'm interested in backing-up is certainly finite and I'll store it on S3 for far less than $50 a year.

Ah, I missed your post here prior ... I just responded, regarding Jungle Disk, in your thread. A good choice you've made too!

Let's continue our Jungle Disk / Amazon S3 discussion there, ok?

Norton Ghost still working great

I've had Norton Ghost for several years now and love it.

I've had to use it a couple of times to restore my entire HD. Once due to a software issue that totally screwed up my system, the other time I had a HD actually fail and need to be replaced.

Both times, Norton Ghost was able to restore by system perfectly.

Whatever backup method you use, it is SO important to do!

Re: Backup Your Data NOW!

Thanks for the reminder. I don't back up as often as I should. Most of my most critical stuff (photos, documents) are usually on more than one computer so I'm semi-backed-up but I should get into a better habit of doing it regularly.

What I should do is invest in a few 500+ GB external USB drives. The 180 GB ones I have now aren't adequate for doing full backups.

That and I need to organize things better so I can back up just the important stuff, and not back up the entire Windows folder at the same time.

I do have an interesting disaster-recovery story with a happy, yet twisted ending. 3 years ago we had a house fire. Shortly before the fire I had backed up my system to DVDs. After the fire, which destroyed nearly everything I owned, the backup DVDs were melted, but the hard drives in the PC survived, so I didn't lose any of my data.

I guess I need to set up an offsite storage scheme too. If only backup solutions would keep up with hard drive capacities. Someone needs to come up with a 2 TB optical drive/media that's as cheap as a DVD burner.

Wow, this thread helped me dodge a bullet today. It reminded me that I hadn't backed up my data drive for a good while, so I got right to it. Just as I had finished, and was preparing to format and reimage the drive, it failed. Talk about a close call.

Well, I'm out a drive, but my precious, precious data is safe.

That is actually a very good idea to use a safety deposit box. I keep a copy of my records on DVD and flash drive stored at the bank and another off-site location just in case.

I have no problem using an external server for storage but to each their own.

Off-site storage IMO was best illustrated in the WTC attacks.

Interesting article here on off-site disaster recovery.
