[game] #38: Day of the Dead

Halloween! The children of Broadtown had been looking forward to this night for weeks. Since the new chief of police, Emos "Shred" Ringer, had finally rid the town of mafia with a massive crackdown, it was declared safe to go trick-or-treating. They looked so cute in their little costumes, traipsing from house to house with their parents in tow. But suddenly, they could all hear wild screams coming from the cemetery. By the time help arrived, the chief's 15-year-old son was lying near the cemetery gates, covered in blood. Rumors raced through the town - some claimed that the boy had puncture wounds in his neck, some claimed that he'd been decapitated, and still others said there was a bloody knife found nearby. Some even said that the boy had died of fright after attempting to desecrate a tombstone, and the blood wasn't his. SK said that it was aliens, and he had pictures to prove it, which he would sell to the Crier for a million dollars. (The citizens shook their heads sadly and hoped for a BSE cure in our lifetime.)

The Crier reported the next day that the boy had died overnight, and the medical examiner said he'd been attacked by an animal. The Crier published a scathing editorial about how Animal Control was a bunch of incompetents who let wild animals roam the streets of Broadtown unchecked.

The citizens of Broadtown refused to believe the story about the animal attack, and were sure that there was a killer in Broadtown again (well, you can't blame them for being a bit paranoid). "Chief Ringer is covering it up so we won't know he's a failure!" they shouted. Broadtownians were getting very well-practiced at the whole lynch-mob thing, and they decided to string up the chief to prove their point. As his body swung on the creaking gallows, a cold wind started to blow, rustling the dead leaves on the ground. There was a moment of silence, and then.... screams.

Another body had been found, covered in blood... Broadtown had a killer on the loose. And they had just lynched their only policeman. Whoops.

I was contemplating the dead cop's name. I am assuming it is the promised anagram and probably a joke, but may be useful anyway. I really should have given AmeritecTech first crack at it, but "horrid messenger" may be one solution.
