Nov 2nd New Prices - 5mbit $55 & 10mbit $60 (=10mb for +$5)

Hi all! I know Nov 2nd has been talked about as the day for the new 16mbit package rollout. In my area we still don't have it, but according to Charter's online prices these are the new rates for their Internet speeds (at least in my area):

5mbit - $54.99/month regular price (online has 6 months for $14.99 promo, only new customers)
10mbit - $59.99/month regular price (no current promo)

This means that 10mbit is now only $5 different from the 5mbit price!

- Does anyone know if the 6 month $15 promo on 5mbit can be done with a call in?
- How lucky have any of you been getting them to apply promos to current customers? Probably have to fight with rentention...

Actually its been between November-Feb for new speeds depending on area.

When the new 16meg comes in area you automatically qualify for 3 month promotional fee for 5meg price. Then jumps to whatever pricing they set for 16meg.

Yea, So get this. I called charter today because they are offering the 10 meg service here ( dont have 16)
The idiots told me that because i was on a current plan that cannot be changed till april btw that if i update to 10 meg that it will be 30 bucks more.
So i say, youre charging me 30 bucks a month more for a product that only cost 5 more dollars. She says yes sir because youre on a bundle. So i guess once again im screwed with charter. I know, i signed up for the bundle. I ask for it but i pray for the day these idiots go under. Soon there is fiber coming to our fair county that will end charter here and that day cant get here soon enough.

Re: Nov 2nd New Prices - 5mbit $55 & 10mbit $60 (=10mb for +$5)

Try calling in again. They should never turn you down for wanting to UPGRADE your service.

If, after calling again, they give you guff, call and press 5 to cancel your service. Tell retentions what you've gone through, that all you want to do is upgrade your internet, but if they can't even do that then you're going to find someone else (verizon, att, whatever) and I can almost guarantee you that you'll get taken care of.

The problem isnt that they arent willing to do it. Its that they want 30 bucks more a month on a product that only cost 5 more bucks for.
The issue they say is because i opted for a bundle.
Trust me, If charter had any one else in this area to compete they wouldnt last a couple of months. People are sick and tired of charter jerkin em off. The only problem is its a charter only area for time being. Thats changing but not quick enough.
I thnk its only fair that if a new product comes along you should have the option to change your bundle. How on earth was i to know they would add faster service for 5 more dollars. The bottom line is 60 bucks is 60 bucks bundled or not.I guess its just cause they wouldnt be making any money off the updates from me cause i already pay near 60 for my internet.

That's exactly why I think that you will be likely to find a csr who will help you if you call back. I've "promotion-hopped" before from one to the other even though it was a bundle. But like I said, if that doesnt work, call retentions. TELL THEM that if they can't do this one simple thing, that you're going to be switching over to Verizon or AT&T (whoever WOULD serve your area IF you had the ability to get DSL) Spoof them, they won't call your bluff. You're not asking for something unreasonable.

I talked to the charter people again tonight but no dice. She said to me the reason for such price difference this time is that im getting my hsi for 39.99 because of a bundle price. If i paid for 10 meg it cost 59.99 so thats 20 bucks difference. I was ok with the charter rep explaining it that way but it still sucks.

If those are the price with cable that's a $5 increase on the 5 meg. And compared to at&t offering of 6 Mbps for $43 a month hardly a bargin. 10 meg for $60 is just a $10 drop. So I am going to assume these are the prices without TV.

Free dialup is never an incentive to go to one over another. Its not like internet is out much. In 2 years I don't think anytime cable has been out it was not out because power was out also..

My former employer touted our DSL as better because he offered 5 hours a free dialup with DSL service.

Really? REALLY?

I don't recall any DSL customer using it by choice in the 26 months I was there. When I had the service, I didn't even have a dialup modem...

I called retentions and got my 5 Mbit reduced to 29.99. He told me once the 16meg was available in my area I could call back and get the 10 meg for 39.99 since they will only have 5, 10 and 16 meg packages

Call the charter number and then choose the option you want to disconnect your service.

alright, so what was everyone paying for 3mb 5mb?
I just bumped myself up to 10 megs for 59.99 a month. Was paying $40 a month for the 3meg with 5 meg preview, so I would like to get an idea of what everyone else paid for their service. The CSR rep took 2 minutes to bump me up and let me know as the deal was finished that the rate was only good for 6 months. Is this set in stone or can I weasel my way into getting locked into this rate indefinitely?

my 3meg was/is $43 (that's with the basic/exp tv bundle price)- I just hope they don't raise prices here - last year or up until last year 3meg was $39.95. If they get rid of 3meg and raise 5meg to more than the $49 it's currently listed for I don't think I can afford it on my income.

I hear you there. $40 is my max for internet, even if it means going to Verizon DSL and their 1.5/384 plan and even though I could afford more. Maybe I'll get lucky and Verizon has removed the filters that were in the way last year when I tried them and I'll be able to get their full 3meg speed. I'm just waiting to see the final result of all the stuff they're doing around here.

Sounds good, I just may do that!

Do I have to reboot the modem for the speeds to go in effect?
This is weird, I did a speedtest right after at it showed near 10mbit speeds but now I'm back down to 3mbit.

Sigh.. Paying for 10mbits and getting half of that.

They probably won't increase the price and jjust give you a free bump. If not threaten to cancel!

speedtests are WILDY inaccurate, their accurate for slow tiers but usually not so much on faster ones. To some real download tests from some big websites like microsoft and then see.

I got a snail mail recently, saying the new pricing in my area (Morgan Hill, CA) is $59.99 for 5Mb -- and when I went online to chat with a rep about a separate issue, I asked what the new pricing for 10Mb would be, and I was quoted $79.99. So I don't know what everyone's talking about.

(I don't have bundle service though -- this is HSI only.)

Charter is also very regional though. What goes for Glendale, CA, doesn't necessarily go for Texas, or Wisconsin, or Georgia. They basically charge as much as each market will allow. For instance, in some rural area, if they're the only game in town, and there isn't even DSL competition, They're free to charge as much as they see fit, which will usually be more than somewhere in Socal where there's FIBER getting laid, hung, strung, up the wazoo, and lots of competition to worry about.

Not true, smaller towns often will set franchise limits on cable providers if only game in town. A area won't let a single provider charge huge fees if income of area exceeds a certain amount. Heck my small down of little over 4k people is cheaper than St.Louis area.

I THINK a lot of that will go away (as the franchise agreements expire) because of the statewide franchise law (for MO)change that took effect in late August.

I'm not talking about huge, excessive fees, but like the $79 for 10meg versus $59 for 10meg.

Maybe I should rephrase: "Charter will charge as much as they can get away with in each market". That would allow for artificial price ceilings set by municipalities.

Are they upping the upload speeds too? This 256k stuff is garbage. I currently have the 3meg down/256k up but just got a letter today about the 5meg speed increase but they didn't say anything about upload caps.

their speed tiers are:
3meg down / 256k up (discontinued)
5meg down / 512k up
10meg down / 1meg up
16meg down / 2meg up (coming soon)

I have a good idea.. provide decent service since you haven't since May and it is November.. oh wait; it is more important to roll out new features while degrading old service

This month I have gotten 3 pricing packages from Charter. The 1 with 5mbit was:
5mbit $44.99
and you could save an additional $5/month if you also have digital cable and telephone unlimited long distance.

Don't forget the additional 10.00 a month if you just have HSI service from them, so basicly 69.00 and 89.99
