iPhony Cash Cow

They are trying to milk the iPhony cash cow for as long as they can before people wake up and realize that there are more cost effective or robust options.

Sorry, this may sound stupid, but can't you just get a blackberry plan and put the sim chip into the i-phone?

Not without unlocking. The way Apple and AT&T have it set up, the only legit way to activate an iPhone is using a SIM that is in it. You can't just take a SIM card from another device (even if it is associated with AT&T account) and use it in an iPhone (well, an exception to this could be if the SIM is from another iPhone). They do allow you to upgrade an existing AT&T account to iPhone (without a contract extension I believe), but during the activation process they deactivate your old SIM and associate the one in the iPhone with your account. Of course, you can still use that SIM from an activated iPhone in a BlackBerry (or any other unlocked GSM phone).

Of course, there is a way around it, which is to unlock the iPhone and use it with your BlackBerry plan or another GSM carrier altogether. However, should something go wrong, don't expect any help from Apple or AT&T should they figure out that you modded that iPhone.
