I've heard BlackBerry does their own data networks. So if you are in a country that supports BlackBerry you aren't roaming.

Anyone comment?
I can't comment for all Blackberries but with Verizon, all you have to do is have an international data plan enabled and that allows unlimited data to be pushed through a particular countries GPRS network. Blackberry doesn't have their own "data" networks.

Boy is the IPOD a major ripoff for international data. I don't know why someone wouldn't go with a BB from T-Mobile or Cingular (or Verizon / Sprint 8830 for that matter).

It's not a separate network, it is the way the APN is handled. Blackberry uses a different APN then standard WAP or Internet. So you use the same GPRS/EDGE network but you connect somewhere else. I cannot find the details on where I saw this again, so I'm beginning to wonder if I was in a daze.
I do believe you are correct. I use the BB8830 to websearch quite a bit overseas and when I was in Taiwan, out of curiosity I used Ipchicken . com to find out if it would show the foreign IP address and it shows up the same as here in the US c000-000.blackberry.net (used 000-000 for example purposes). I do believe the web requests are routed over the blackberry server.

I can't find any record of RIM having data or voice networks of their own on GSMWORLD. Doesn't mean it isn't the case I guess.
