| Paypal Exchange Rates
A few weeks ago, I ranted because Paypal was not offering at least even dollars (vs the US Dollar) even though our dollar at the time was worth 1.04 US.
Today I made another purchase and $1CDN = just over $1.04US

| I mentioned that yesterday here
Another "sign of the times"... In the past when I'd get a US quarter in change I'd hoard it for use the next time I went south. Today a cashier tried to pass one off on me and realizing that it was worth barely 23¢, I gave it back to her and asked for a real quarter. |

You can't take 50 dollars in US quarters and exchange it to canadian. A quarter US will convert to a quarter canadian. It's just the way it is. It was this way when the canadian dollar was worth 70 cents US. |

That's not been my experience when south of the border when our dollar was worth less than the US buck. They typically wouldn't accept any Canadian coinage. I once included 2 measly Canadian pennies with my payment for some delicious Taco Bell in Florida and the cashier refused to accept it. |

| reply to Bender2000 said by Bender2000 :um...why??? In part for the reason Feets gave you. It's happened to me too so now when I go stateside I like to have some US change with me. The same applies when travelling to Europe. It's a real hassle to get a luggage cart at some airports without a Euro or Pound coin to feed the dispenser. But in the US they refuse Canadian coins not because they (were) worth less, but because they're different, i.e. they're not US coins. The farther you get from the border the less likely are they to know anything about Canada. I imagine many, if not most, cashiers in Florida (or California in my case) have never seen Canadian coins and have absolutely no idea what they're worth so their knee-jerk reaction is to refuse them (and even think you're trying to cheat them.)
But the real reason for my comment. In the past, a US coin was worth more than the equivalent Canadian one so psychologically I felt that I'd scored (slightly) more value when I got one in my change. Now that the situation has reversed it feels like I'm getting short-changed. Of course it's not a big deal in economic terms, but it is a change in perspective. |

| IIRC, there was never any exchange rate on coins anyway...when i was back in high school, one of my friends opened a US account and deposited all the US coin into it...then every time he went the US, he withdrew the money from there...he would get his US coin from circulation "at par", and deposit it into his US account...i didn't really understand all that work for a measly $20/year he ended up getting...you couldn't even do that today because of the fees involved in having accounts now (there weren't any back then). -- -"I have tried to see things from your point of view, but no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I just can't get my head that far up my ass."

| reply to Feets I guess this is because of the stupidity of many americans? Anyways, if you're given an american coin in Canada instead of a Canadian coin, then what's the big deal regardless? Just spend that american coin in Cnaada Even a pepsi machine will take it (generally) |

| reply to dirtyjeffer Banks have to ship foreign cash (to somewhere, I'm not sure where) and coins are too expensive to ship compared to lighter bills. That's why banks won't exchange US coins but instead accept them at par (they just go in with the other Canadian coins).
