[VA] NoVa - Speed Tests

I frequently use »www.speedtest.net/ to test my speeds. For those of us in NoVA, we can use the Wash DC test site, or the Frederick MD site; The DC site is always the recommended one. However, my speed test results are consistently higher using the Frederick site.

Are others experiencing the same results? Just curious.

Any speed test sites over internet with cable broadband is not guaranteed according to any cable companies with their own policies which is "up to" you can get...

Of course. I was just curious if others in my area were seeing tests report better speeds from the Frederick site. If so, it may be due to less congestion on the routes to Frederick, or perhaps less load on the Frederick test site.

Sure would be nice if Cox provided some internal test sites so folks could measure their connection speeds more accurately.

There is some internal site in my area of Kansas »www.coxrox.net/

And sometimes I maxed out 20Mbps downstream and sometimes I get 15Mbps downstream and my TCP setting is 16MB under Linux but Linux will autotune TCP that I am running without problems Linux is efficient management.

I peeked some sites claim that windows vista uses 16MB for TCP setting, interesting... But windows vista TCP is not tweakable and I prefer to Linux which I can tweak my TCP setting.

»www-didc.lbl.gov/TCP-tuning/Wind···sta.html

Good News! Windows Vista includes TCP Autotuning. It will use up to a 16 MB maximum receive window. If anyone knows how to increase this above 16 MB please let me know.

Vista also includes "Compound TCP (CTCP)", which is similar to cubic on Linux. To enable this, set the following:

netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp"

If you even need to disable / reenable autotuning, here are the commands:

netsh interface tcp set global autotunninglevel=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotunninglevel=normal

I just ran it this morning, from Kansas, I noticed I am zipping around the net faster than normal.

Here's my test from DC: »www.speedtest.net/result/199023680.png

And here's the same test from Frederick:

Very BIG difference.

I see in looking at whois that coxrox.net is owned by Cox.

BTW, I tried the link and it requires authentication to access.

ID=test
PW=speed

However, the site is really too far away from NoVA to assess quality of our local routes. Cox needs speed test sites within its network in each major market or geographic area. If you are in Oklahoma or close, coxrox should work OK.

Having packet loss and slow performance issues tonight. This has been an intermittent problem for me for about a month now. Very frustrating.
