| What can I get out of the state of Emergancy?
Here is a question I have been asked... (by my wife) Because of the fire in the Cajon Pass (I15 at Devore) I was unable to go to work one morning (the I5 was a mess and I wasn't even going to thing about taking Highway 2 before dawn).
Can I ask for a day's compensation? (I am a programmer on contract who is not allowed to work form home) And if so, from who? -- Morituri Nolumus Mori |

| reply to TheRul I have several friends and relatives who were not able to get down the hill because of the fire and the resulting closure of the 15/215...They were all on salary so they got paid anyway.
I think you are in the unique situation a Jury member would find them selves.
I would suggest you contact the San Bernadino State Labor board and see what they say, after you ask your boss first if you get paid for that day and then take the next step. -- My Bloggs, »www.insidetheie.com/ »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ »vietaffairsvets.blogspot.com/ Each Mans Death is his own Apocalypse. |

| reply to TheRul I don't know how much FEMA has been able to help you, but I've been able to have my accountant deduct from my taxes for lost wages when I was freelancing and was in the hospital. It wasn't a full amount, but it was better than nothing (deducted for lost wages, not hospital bills) -- [[Your signature here]] |

| reply to CurtesyFlush said by CurtesyFlush :Are you even a tiny bit embarrassed for asking this? TheRul did qualify that question by saying his wife wanted to know. As you may be aware, per our SoCal Forum bylaws, the "wife" quantifier (especially as it relates to the hubby's income or revenue) usurps and preempts all preexisting rules of decorum and self-humiliation.
You are clearly a bachelor. |

How about asking if you can work a Saturday, if you need to makeup the money that badly?
FEMA is for people whose lives have been wrecked by disaster. Would that be you? I thought not.
Edit: I didnt know Ylen had a brother out in Victorville. |

It cost me a substantial amount of money to evacuate my horses for a week and I'm grateful we didn't loose anything and while the additional expenses really hurt my family financially I'm not applying for any kind of assistance or aide! We'll manage and just pinch the penny's for a while until we can get back in the swing of things.

| said by CatSnak : This kind of post really burns me! No pun intended I hope. I am glad I did not lose my house, and I am glad that none of my family had to evacuate. and I am glad that the only real suffering I had to do was to drive the 2 highway twice. (both going up the hill back home) and I feel for you having to take care of your animals. But I still have my responsibilities and I plan on taking care of them. And if my measly salary is too much to ask for, I shall become a bum, camp out infront of someone's house and ask for FOOD for my children. If I can not at least feel free to check on keeping my salary coming in when I was put out, then we should also kill welfare. (a big jump yes, but the same idea) |

| No pun was intended at all.
My gripe is you're talking 1 day. What would you do if you were sick and couldn't make into work? With the amount you are talking about I'd be a whole lot less aggravated if you used what ever vacation or sick time you had available vs. using federally mandated funds designed to help those who lost their homes and/or belongings or suffered much greater losses.
I'm sorry you missed a day's worth of work and pay. I'm glad you didn't suffer any other losses but come on, if one day's pay is going to affect your finances that much then WOW I really feel for you.
I don't make a great deal of money and my expenses are very high (child support and what not) and if it wasn't for my girlfriend working as well we couldn't make it. But we always manage to pay the bills and put food on the table regardless of the financial strains dealt us. We may not have anything left to take vacations and such but we do manage to at least do the things we enjoy most which is spend time with each other, our family's and our horses.
Please don't take any of this too personal as I don't know your full financial/family situation and such. I'm not trying to make an example out of you or anything like that. With what we've been through this last month and the financial hit's we've taken in the last couple of weeks alone, you post just came across as very petty to me.
Sorry if I've offended you or anyone else. -- Founding member, 2002-2003, 2005-2006 Director of Communications, 2004-2005 Secretary for the Crunchenstein Project |

Sorry if I've offended you or anyone else. I threw a little fit. Sorry. Felt like I was being attacked, and had low blood sugar. I have eaten so I can be nice now, (I think, at least I'm not a female country singer) Yes, one day does hurt. And when you work 6 days a week, (and already took a day off that week) it bites into the budget. I am the only one working while my wife goes to school. She finishes soon and will start working, but that is late Jan. Yes, my wife asked me, so I though I would ask. Sometimes Contract work sucks. And sometimes it's great. I did not think that such a firestorm (not just from you, and yes Pun is intended, I am funny most of the time) would erupt. But with all that gotten off of my chest, I am glad you were at least able to get you horses out of the evac. |

| Jeez, I cant believe you can justify this--how self-centered can you be? Do you know that you are taking money from people who *lost everything*? Have you NO shame?
And I dont like giving my tax dollars to someone who thinks he is just "owed" this because he couldnt work that day. Dont take on contract work if you can't hack it. Been there and done it and yes, sometimes it sucks but you know the advantages as well. Like I said, work an extra day to make up the money. Cant imagine your boss would object to that. Or is actually working to make the money too much of an inconvenience when you can smell FREE money?
I cant believe people sometimes. |

Understandable, and yeah I got a little hot under the collar myself due to what we went through. I know how missing one day can really hurt, (my roommate last year did contract work and I've seen what he's been through). Thank you for your concern and I am glad you're family is safe as well.

Or is actually working to make the money too much of an inconvenience when you can smell FREE money? I cant believe people sometimes. Ah yes, I thought I was bing attacked. (sigh, the things I put up with, and not just my wife) First, I have 2 jobs. I don't believe in free money, I could be on Welfare life would be easier (though I was on WIC when my daughter was born, yea eggs). Second, Shame only comes when you are not willing to at least look at the possibilities, and explore them, a path not explored and all that. Third, There is no such thing as a free lunch. There are ALWAYS strings, and I want as few strings between me and the government, unless I am doing the governing. Fourth, I do look after myself and my family, but it does not mean that I am self centered. I know many people in high places who try to get every penny out of everything they can, that I feel is cheating, but that is why they have the money. Fifth, You don't have to think of it as your tax dollars, mine went in the pool too. Sixth, Yes, the boss did object to that, sucks but that is life. Seventh, I commute 90 min one way, so I can't imagine that I have been inconvienced by not working, and no I do not Hack. eighth, I can't believe people sometimes either, they can get really greedy. (See number Four) Nineth, aren't you glad I can count? I havent even had to take my shoes off yet. |
