First, don't expect "Steve"'s new, er old, principled, er corrupt, majority, er minority, government to care. They're taking their instructions on these sorts of issues directly from the recording and movie industries.

Secondly, this sort of thing isn't unusual. Go to any US network that offers free content downloading. See what happens when you try to access that content using a Canadian IP address.

This has to do with US content providers honouring agreements with Canadian broadcasters. 95% of the content on Canadian television is made in the US, and outfits like CTV and Global buy up the exclusive rights to show those here in Canada. This is important so that the advertising revenue in the Canadian market is secured, and the advertisers feed the networks on both sides of the border. Then to make sure we Canadians watch the Canadian broadcast of a US program with Canadian commercials, the US broadcast on satellite and cable is "sim-subbed" (simultaneous substituion) with the Canadian one.

This even extends to things like movies. For example, when a US network has a James Bond marathon on, in Canada it's usually replaced with a marathon of something else, because another Canadian TV station has bought the exclusive rights to show those movies here. And also why we don't see any of the "cool" Superbowl ads in Canada.

I too, think this entire thing is stupid. If it's going to change it needs to come from the CRTC. But frankly, all the parties in this dance - the networks, cable companies, satellite companies, CRTC, are all in on this, and it's not likely to change anytime soon. :/

address.
I doubt that Stephen Harper personally decided the other day, after pondering the issue for some time, to block Comedy Central from Canadian IP's. Save the hyperbole for CanPol. There are U.S. media sites that, for copyright or marketing reasons or other, block access from outside the U.S. It isn't a conspiracy!

If it bothers anyone, use a proxy. To every technological obstacle, there is a technological solution. Personally, I don't get that bothered about these things, but yes, it's pretty small-minded in a supposed "global economy" and "global village".

I completely understand the content such as video feeds being blocked (such as on abc, cbs, nbc, tbs websites), but THE ENTIRE SITE is blocked. I can still go to www.cbs.com, it'll block me from watching episodes of shows, but I can still read about what's coming up on next Sunday's Amazing Race.

I can't get to the home page for The Colbert Report, Daily Show, or anything else.

go to www.comedycentral.com and see for yourself. This goes way beyond blocking video content.

Who said that he did?

However, his government, i.e. ministers like Verner and before that Oda, have been more than receptive to the ministrations of the industry while being stone deaf to the public. So much for the "principle" of listening to the Grassroots. (And no "Steve", that's not the name of a new Canadian band.)

But you're right, I digress...

If it bothers anyone, use a proxy.
Or find the content on Usenet, Bit Torrent, etc.

Use TOR if you simply must get there. It's slow as molasses in January at times, but it should work.

hmmm...that's odd...because i seem to recall the conservative appointee Maxime Bernier (when he was in charge of Industry Canada), put in the position by Harper himself, overruling the CRTC on some decisions, and forcing the CRTC to change some of their ways...if anything, things have improved since the conservatives were put there...that said, i don't know how the current "boss" is doing.

Well Oda was in charge of Heritage when Bernier was Industry (they've both now been shuffled elsewhere.) Her tenure was marked by controversies over her close relationships with the broadcasting and copyright lobbies. Read all about it on Geist's blog.

Then again, since we all know that "Steve" is a micromanaging control-freak, maybe he really is calling all the shots on this stuff
