Not letting Verizon off the hook but dang. Talk about trying to milk a cow. Kind of hard to furnish a 800sqft rented duplex with that much money. I'd like to see an itemized list. |

| Hmmmm, let's see, besides maybe 25K worth of belongings, they might be responsible for the damage to the structure, not to mention being put out on the street. Guess Verizon expects them to sleep in their car! I'd sue for every last penny incurred, even lost pay for time off work. Sue the pants off those suckers. Personally I think 58K is measley, apartment or mansion! |

1 edit | reply to ninjatutle LOL, I was thinking the same thing. What about the tenants responsibility in having renters insurance? I am not saying that this is not a sad thing that happened but responsibility goes both ways AND the $58k worth of damage to belongings seems way off unless the guy living there is Tony Sopranos nephew, ha ha.
This Paul McNamara really hates Verizon, I think he has been wined and dined by Comcast or something. I am a subscriber of Network World and he has never had anything good to say about Verizon .. it is like his crusade to attack Verzion. Very odd.
Has anyone ever seen how Comcast installers go about running cables? Talk about drilling through things! At least Verizon's techs are trained much more .. and yes .. accidents can still happen. But come on, in comparison Verizon techs vs. those sub-contractor cable installers is like comparing a rocket scientist to a Grease Monkey mechanic. |

| reply to Antonella81 From the article: Peter Cheung, who owns the duplex that houses the two apartments, said repairs are expected to start this week.
âIt was a small fire in the wall, so the firemen had to chop part of the front wall out,â Cheung said.
The damage will probably cost at least $30,000 to repair, he said, adding that he expects his insurance company to cover the cost. Want to try again? Not that Verizon shouldn't cough up some change, but these people are milking it for far more. Just too cheap for renters insurance. You don't see the building owner taking that stance. Nope. Let his insurance cover it, and let them go after Verizon. |

There rent is what, $800/month. Displaced for a month or two. They didn't have to pay rent during this period.
So a hotel suite probably $100/day. $6,000 for 2 months with no discounts. No cable bill, no utilities.
No moving expenses, all there stuff is burnt.
Still leaves about $50k for stuff they claimed they have. Hmm maybe the guy did have 2,000 DVD movies. |

Nightly hotel bill: $150/day (enough room for 3 people including 1 child.) 1 month = ~$4500 Food: If hotel has no kitchenette, At least $20/day (3 people, breakfast lunch and dinner at McDonalds or Burger King) 1 month = ~$600 Clothes: Got to replace what was burned up in the fire for daily needs: ~$1000 just to start (again, this is for 3 people including a child) CPAP machine (for dad's sleep apnea) ~$2000 from a reputable supply house that would include programming the unit (since it has to be done by prescription ONLY)
Just those things are ~$7100 not including items to be replaced in the apartment. Have you looked at furniture recently?
Yeah, this stuff adds up quick. |

| They're claiming $58,000 just for belongings, not living expenses. That's a lot of shit! The fire was in the wall, so nothing should have been totally destroyed. They claim smoke and chemical damage, which tells me they probably opened the wall and just used an extinguisher. Sorry, I'm not buying $58,000 in damages. |

Actually, any clothing or stuff with fabric in it will absorb smoke particles during a fire and insurance companies will consider everything a loss because of just smoke and water damage. |

| Actually no, everything won't be considered a loss. But that's not what their insurance company is doing, is it? Of course not, they had none. So what do they do? They claim everything there as a loss. Verizons willing to pay I'd bet, but for actual losses, not what they are claiming as a loss. |

Cleaning them properly costs more than to replace them.
Since Verizon caused the accident, they are responsible. Even IF the people had renter's insurance, Verizon's insurance would still be held responsible. Even my apartment had more than $1800 in stuff and that is not counting any of my computer equipment or electronics. |

| Their insurance company would not pay for Verizon's mistake. Since it was their mistake, Verizon's insurance would be liable to pay for it. Their insurance company will sue Verizon's to settle it. Have you ever filed an insurance claim before? The liable parties insurance is always on the hook for replacement. And of course some of the totals may be overstated. But who are we to guess at how much the person had in their home? I know people who have single items in their houses that are worth more than $58K. Could be handed down antiques that could not be replaced. But you don't know that, you'd rather just call someone a liar with no evidence first hand. |

1 edit | Yes, I have filed claims. My insurance company cut the check, and then took it up with the other parties company. Hell, the property owner's insurance is paying for the damage caused to the actual structure, so there goes your theory. And all I actually did say is that it is unlikely and that I wasn't buying it that they had stuff totalling that amount. Usually something worth any significant, highly valuable amount would get mentioned. |
