| [Cam] K100D for the wife?
So I'm thinking of buying a DSLR for the wife as a Christmas present. She has no SLR experience, as everything she's ever owned has been a point and shoot. I'm thinking of a K100D for her, mostly because it's priced pretty low, and if she does not like it after trying it, I'm not out too much. How easy is this to operate? I know it will have an auto mode, but if she tries to navigate around the menu will she get totally lost? Any thoughts? -- ANIMALS - It's What's for Dinner Whittier Weather My Weather Page

| I found the menus very easy to navigate on the K10D, which has the same menu system as the K100D for the most part. It seemed very familar, kind of like the Canon menus. And, if you use the camera in all-auto the results are good.
My only concern would be the lens choice. The kit lens, which is 18-55mm is great, but alittle limited in focal length for someone coming from a P&S that goes from like, 30-300mm etc.. Pentax does offer a lens now that goes from like, 18-250mm which would be a great one lens that does all choice for a previous P&S user.. -- Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. |

I know Tamron is not the best lens, but I think it would work out for starters. If she gets into photography, we can get a better lens later. |

1 edit | reply to yj4x4 If she has never used an SLR before don't complicate things too much. Buy it with the 18-55 kits lens. As kit lenses go this is one of the best. If you want something longer Buy the Tamron 18-250 lens like Jodokast96 suggested. This is fairly new that has been tested and actually performs well for a long range zoom.
But if it was me I'd start with the kit lens only and go from there. After all you don't want to make the camera too heavy and bulky for her to comfortably use. And that why people love P&S, small light and easy to carry and take anywhere. |

| reply to yj4x4 FYI.. Nothing wrong with Tamron lenses!
It almost sounds to me like your wife would be better off with a nice higher end P&S like the Panasonic FZ8 or similar. It will do far better in AUTO mode then a dSLR will, and you won't have to buy more lenses because it already covers 36-432mm or something like that (can't remember off hand exactly, sorry). We own a few dSLRs, tons of SLRs, and an FZ8 and I frequently still grab the FZ8 out of sheer convenience, lol.
A dSLR takes alot of learning to properly use and get good images from. -- Images are Copyrighted and use is NOT permitted. What is RSD? |

| She has a Nikon 5200 P&S right now. But every time I go out with my Nikon D40, she makes some comment about wishing to take photos like I do. (Of course 4 years of Photography in High School, plus 30 years of SLR use do have some advantages!). So I figured I'd get her a nice DSLR and we can go out together and I can teach her how to do more than "take snapshots". |

| So I ended picking her up a combo package with the 100D body, 18-55 & 55-200 Pentax lenses, 2 gig memory card, camera case, & a cheapo tripod for just under $700.00. Now the hard part will be waiting till Christmas to give it to her... -- ANIMALS - It's What's for Dinner Whittier Weather My Weather Page

| reply to rogue_ said by rogue_ :Don't play with it until then! If you do, post up the images Well I imagine I should check to make sure it's up to the regular Pentax quality standards, and everything is functional before I give it to her, hadn't I? |

Sounds like you bought them from Cameta Camera on eBay. the amount is consistent to the price of the set, after the $100+25 MIR's. Fantastic deal. |

| reply to yj4x4 Well the camera finally came today! The place I had originally bought it from screwed me around and after 3 weeks finally told me they were out of stock. After I got the refund, I bought it from Cameta Camera, and it was here in about a week.

It's raining today, but tomorrow I plan to "test" it, and take some pictures with both the Pentax and my Nikon to compare. -- ANIMALS - It's What's for Dinner Whittier Weather My Weather Page
