ESET has taken a big step backwards!

I just bumped my original thread with this post, but I think it's important enough to start a new thread as well. Sorry if that's against the rules.

---

I'm reversing my original assessment of the new ESET Smart Security. My apologies to anyone who bought it or installed it on my recommendation.

I bought a 3 user licence when it was released earlier this week but it has many more bugs than the beta, far too many for me to put up with any longer, and there are even more bugs being reported on Wilders 24/7.

I'm not the only unhppy camper. See »www.wilderssecurity.com/showthre···t=190729 and many other threads.

I still like the program even though it's far too shaky and unstable for me to recommend at this time, but I'll keep the licence and hope for a more reliable version soon.

My father lives in Sydney, Australia. He was emailed a free NOD32-to-ESS upgrade offer, but luckily for him that hasn't happened or the old guy would have had big problems. I told him to stick with v2 for now. That's another sore point with me. Why the hell did ESET make the offer if they can't produce the goods?

Anyway, if you're thinkng of installing ESET Smart Securiy, my advice is DON'T! In its present state, it's crap!

Too bad for ESET. I came close to installing the trial to decide between this and Avira and I won't even bother. I will be buying Avira at the end of my trial..

Yeap besides Nod32 Heuritics, the rest of nod v3 appears to be a gen or two behind.
Firewall is no firewall at all (once it craps out).
No real Stealth scanning (raw disk) (where most of the malware is going now).
Just slowing down the system and making windows unstable (Like norton 2006)

Finally, I sent them a sample 4 days ago (KAV included it in defs in about 5 hours...I am yet to see it from ESET guess they are too busy fixing V3 to care about new malware at the moment).

Unfortunately the same is true about v. 3.x of Nod32 AV. I have experienced first hand problems with v.3.x's email component, including the well documented "lag upon exit".

It seems Eset may have rushed the release of this version. I have since reverted back to version 2.7, which continues to run flawlessly.

I've watched, with general interest, the progress of ESS. First, it's, to me, surprising that ESET has taken this long to enter the suite arena .. especially considering the time that other comparable, formidable and very popular, AV companies (like Avira, BitDefender and Kaspersky) have had suite offerings.

Recently, as I indicated in another post, I'd spent some hours reading the ESET forum and was aware of some remaining bugs around the RC1 time-frame. I too had encouraged folks that expressed reservations about getting involved with ESS too early that, surely, ESET wouldn't do stupid, releasing ESS before it was "ready". I stand amazed. Not only have they, apparently, done just that .. they've managed to release, in build 560, a product that is inferior (even more bugs) to RC1.

Leaves one wondering how this happens. If there's an upside, I don't see it. Yet, ESET joins "others" who'll be some time dealing with the downside damage wrought on their business.

Maybe ESET's hiring from Kaspersky.. Have you read some of the lame responses the ESET Fanboys and ESET staff have been replying with over at Wilders... LOL It really is funny.....

The FW isn't all that crapped out for me. RC1 worked great but the released version kept losing my password and shutting itself down for no reason on 2 of my 3 computers.

I'm VERY disappointed with ESET. It looked like such a terrific program in beta.

Not to contradict anyone or diminish anyone else's experience, but I'm using version 3.0.560.0 of the antivirus (not security suite) and am not having any problems so far. The release version prevented Outlook Express from opening, but that seems to have been fixed. I'm not having any of the slowdowns or instability issues I keep reading about, but maybe ESS is a whole different ball of wax.

That's what annoys me too. I found a few minor bugs in RC1, but it was a beta so it didn't worry me much. When I bought the released version 560 I found it had 10 times as many bugs as RC1 and my password died 5 times a day.

Reading on Wilders Security, it's looking like ESET will have a hard time recovering from the damage that's been wrought already, and for sure there will be more coming down the pipe.

I'll keep the faith and keep my fingers crossed. It can only get better.

Some of the posts on Wilders look like they were written by ESET's Damage Control Department.

Ok, lame responses aside .. I'll grant that KL's business wasn't helped by the chkdsk issue. However, to my knowledge, KL has a solid enough history releasing thoroughly tested/debugged product. The chkdsk slowdown/hang doesn't count .. who knew from beta testing such a miniscule number of systems would be so affected?

Currently, both the v7 MP1 beta and v8 alpha are being tested simultaneously .. and, those folks involved, I think, doing great work.

Course, with v8's release, this chkdsk issue dies.

They seem to be having management, organizational and coordination problems like Exaspery has been suffering from. After I loaded RC1 about 3 weeks ago I signed up for the Beta program. The link they sent me was for an older beta that had already expired. They never e-mailed me any info about purchasing, licensing or dealership. I am still using RC1 and it has developed a flaky stability problem with it's outlook express integration. ESET looks like it is run by another small collection of rich, stoned European drug addicts who are paying a lot of very skilled programmers to create a nice product, but are too wasted to properly finish anything they start or to stand up and responsibility deliver support for the product they intend to sell. They had plenty of Beta time to have these bugs worked out, and if not, should have taken some more time. I would still love to use the product with the functionality it is designed to deliver but will have to wait for a stable version before releasing any of my gold coins.

The development cycle of ESS/3.0 was a bit of a shaky one.

Eset first showed off an ESS alpha version at Cebit in March 2006.

However, I don't think they gave it a release date. They just kinda said "when it's done".

In April of this year, after most people had forgotten about ESS/3.0, they finally released Beta 1a.
In late June, they released Beta 1b with a few minor fixes over Beta 1a.

In late August, they released Beta 2. A month later, towards the end of September, RC1 was released.

They collected bug reports for a little over a month then pushed out a Final.

Honestly, I don't know how they screwed this up. They had a working alpha in March 2006 and took a year to release a public beta, then 7 more months to release a final. Why is the final so buggy?

P.S. DRM Killer, you and your gold coins should register on DSLR.

I'm sure they will fix their stuff at some point, but the damage has already done. They have proved to their supporters taht they dont care about quality as much as they should.

The last beta still had a few minor bugs but the program was brilliant. I didn't expect the release would be a bug farm.

I'm staying with it because I know how good it will be when it's cleaned up, but most people won't be so forgiving.

As you said, the damage has already been done. Nobody who reads Broadband Reports will buy it, and who can blame them?

The few bugfixes don't make it worth the download bandwidth.

I'll keep on waiting.

I don't think it's so much that they don't care about quality as the fact that once you release a program it's going to be used by people with vastly different computer setups and skill levels, as opposed to the group of knowledgeable people who are willing and able to be beta testers.

It seems to me that most "new" releases from the bigger name players in the security field have been complained about as being buggy, screwing up systems, etc. I think that is just a normal consequence of the complexity of today's programs. Would we like new security programs to be released in pristine, perfect running order? Of course we would. Is that realistic? No, it's not.

The majority of these companies are running a business and it is in their best interest to stay current with the marketplace and release a good product that customers will want. I have to believe that the reputable ones don't want to release a product with major problems, nor do I think that their technical people do slipshod work.

It is like anything. If you rush to be the first to have the new toy, sooner or later an improved version will come out and you will be disappointed that it is better than yours. That being said, I did try out the new version of NOD32 but I had problems with it on my computer and went back to v2.7. Does that mean that I'm never going to install 3.0? Nope, it just means that I'm going to wait until they correct the issues that I was having. That doesn't mean that everyone will have the problem that I had, because no one else has the exact same combination of programs on their computer that I do.

It's just a matter of being patient.
