| IT Fixed Asset Management
hi,
i am looking to implement some kind of IT asset management system. i work for a SMB, so i am not looking for some huge enterprise solution, but i don't want some $49 off the shelf product that will not grow and is stripped down.
specifically, i would like to be able to track and monitor all IT assets, both fixed and consumable. i want a barcode system to identify assets. i want a check in/check out system for assets. i do not need it to integrate with an ERP, preferably it is standalone. we use microsoft servers, and would prefer something using MSSQL backend.
anyone have any suggestions, experience they would like to share?
my apologies if this is not the right forum. |

| I spent many a year working with Tangram (now Opsware) Asset Insight. Here's their website: »www.opsware.com/
Ours was on a very large enterprise scale but they are scalable. Plus they have clients which run on a variety of operating systems.
If you have specific questions, please let me know and I'd be happy to share some of my experiences. |

A guy at work was asking if I wanted to be a VAR for these guys with him.
I have not accepted the offer but I thought this might be just what you are looking for. |

| reply to dropshadow Man, I am jealous you have the option to even consider this. You want to know what I use to track assets? Even with our asset management system, one set of management decreed that it needed to be installed but other sets of management didn't commit the resources to installation. The decreeing management was toothless so we had lukewarm results at first. Took several years before everyone discovered the joys of having an up-to-date asset management database. |

Good point there. I think it mainly comes down to the people who ultimately decide to authorize the money for purchasing not really understanding the positive impact that the new purchase will make.
They usually see "money leaving the nest" (short term) instead of increased x, y, z, (long term gains). Believe me, I am in that boat now....I have to justify and explain every single request for purchasing several times and a lot of times, it doesn't get approved until something happens such as a sales executive losing a huge customer because their battery died during the presentation. However, we requested the battery months ago because we knew it was bad before deploying it. -- The only place where Success comes before Work is in the dictionary. |

Or Newt »www.komododigital.com/
I've used both, and ended up buying Newt. |
