Passed my General on 7/13/09 and license issued today 7/21/09

Now I have to solve the problem of how to get an antenna up in a CC&R neighborhood. I'm looking at a multi-band flagpole solution or a multi-band dipole in the attic --- I'm sure I can fit a 20-15-10 meter and might be able to get to 40-20-15-10 meters with the right antenna. I'm looking at the Coax-Cable Trap Dipole at '»degood.org/coaxtrap/' as a possibility although I'd rather a commercial product at this point.

I'm about 60 miles west of Rockford, near the Mississippi. I worked mostly DX and some stateside stuff early on, but your call sounds familiar. Do you work contests or DX? I don't have my logbook handy, or I'd see if you were in there.

Unfortunately, I haven't been active since moving to a different house in 1999 and not having the time to move all my "stuff"... ;)

Oh and the exams were carefully monitored at a federal office by a federal official. You had to be able to draw circuts and do math with paper and pencil. Scored on the spot.

JC how are you practicing the code? If you are gradually increasing the speed it will take a long time to improve. Best bet is to listen to CW with a character speed of 20-25wpm with the characters spaced out for say 10wpm. When comfortable then decrease the spacing for maybe 15wpm. When that speed is somewhat comfortable, increase the character speed to 25-30wpm and the spacing at 20-25wpm. If you gradually increase the speed of the characters, you have to relearn the sound of the characters frequently. The Farnsworth method (what I described) enables you to increase speed without relearning the sounds at each speed.

When listening to W1AW CW practice, try and choose the times when they are going from fast to slow, you'll pick up more and more of the faster cw and comprehension at lower speeds will improve at a much more rapid rate.

I also spent a lot of drive time translating signs and license plates out loud. This helped considerably.

download N8KBR's General Class Study Guide (PDF file), take it to Kinkos and have it printed double sided (unless you can do it at home) and put it in a binder. His materials really cut to the chase and several friends have used them as an adjunct to the regular guides. Trouble with logs and antilogs? So what. Not going to see more than 1 or 2 questions that need them so get the other questions right. You don't need 100% to pass.

If your condo has a porch or even a through wall A/C unit you could use a mobile antenna (screwdriver would be nice) on a railing mount, homebuilt mount or mag mount on the A/C. Get the upgrade, gear will come later.

Saw you in a couple other posts, but didn't realize you just got your Tech a couple weeks ago, congrats!!! I got my Tech a couple of years ago with a buddy of mine. I went for my General last year and happy I did; that's when you realize there is much more out there than U/VHF :) I started studying for Extra, but haven't gotten too far into it yet. I'm more of a digital user than phone, and was suprised how many digital modes there were over HF. I started out with PSK31, and started playing this summer with JT65. Hope to catch you on the air sometime.

Oh they passed me but have you ever noticed the moon in my avaitar? It's there cause a bird landed on the strand around noon shook the pole ever so slightly and I am still stuck up there hugging the pole with my eyes closed. ;-)

Whats strange is I love flying but anything else over 30 or 40 feet and I'm panicking I can't get near windows in tall buildings and glass elevators are a real adventure to ride in.

Two to three inch movement and unsteady walking.

Woh.

Low loss on feedline, but a PITA to make a hardware reset huh.
Pretty tough to reset.. The feedline loss at 442mhz mandates that the repeater be aloft. Weather can close off access during certain times of the year.. Not unusual for fairly benign wind movement at ground level to have 50mph or so winds aloft.. The tower doesn't move side to side due to the extreme force (and weight of the 3" diameter guy wires..

But it does rotate slightly, best guess using the horizon for a reference, about a steady 2-3" peak to peak oscillation at the edge of the platform. Makes for unsteady walking on the platform when this is going on.

The tower is mounted on a bearing to let it rotate slightly under high wind conditions. Uneven wind loading from side mounted antennas on the legs causes the rotation. A twist in the tower structure is the primary fail mode, so better to let it oscillate with the wind.

The wind makes for some interesting sounds up there. At lower speeds it whistles through the tower at a higher frequency and as it picks up to around 50mph, you start hearing this low frequency groaning sound.. I believe that is from the lighter weight cross braces on the tower starting to vibrate slightly.

The 1360' long twin cables on the elevator inside the tower make some really neat sounds as the winds blow them over and make contact with the sides of the tower. If you remember the sounds of the weapons fired in the movie StarWars, I read that is essentially where those sounds came from.. One of the audio engineers on the movie used the neat reverberating sound made when you strike a guy wire on a telephone pole or tower.. They lowered the speed of the recording to lower the frequency.. These cables are long enough to make those same low frequency reverberating sounds. That's the primary indicator at the bottom of the tower that it's going to be windy aloft. Right... I'm more nervous at 20-30ft cause I can see the ground beyond that steady as a rock. Don't want to stray far OT... My father was an electrician/HVAC and did alot of work for Howard Bros. when they around other than the heat never minded the rooftop work or riding the cherry picker to replace parking lot lights.

Ok I nearly spit soda all over the monitor laughing so hard... I've been that high but not on a tower didnt phase me in the least I'm visually impaired I can see the ground but don't really get the feeling of heights so it doesn't bother me, other benifit if I were to fall I'd never see the ground coming! :D

Someone took a picture of their feet standing on the grating of repeater platform on a tower. Through the grating you can see the ground...hundreds of feet down. :huh:

N1ZUK -- Licenced for just over 10 years, Extra for half of that time. I am a VE with W5YI, helping administer Amateur and Commercial license exams. I also am a ARRL VUCC Award Manager.

Currently, most of my station is off the air (living in a condo), but hope to get the equipment out of the boxes in the next year or two, after I move. Just in time for propagation to pick back up. :)

I do a bit of HF DX hunting, as well as contesting. And I'll experiment with every mode and gizmo that I come across. But my favorite is the 6M "Magic Band". My best QSO was working VP6BR on Pitcarin Island from here in Vermont, with 10W SSB into a homemade 2el delta quad 10 feet off the ground... »www.uksmg.org/vp6br.htm

Cosmicvoid and Beeron, your old calls are available. Take the Technician test and then put in for your old call under the vanity system. A couple of casual read throughs with any of the study guides should do it. General class exam isn't much harder but the Extra still is an eye opener for many. Dive back in, the ether's fine.

My memory is not good enough to remember my call however.

I do remember buying a ssb cb radio base radio from radio shack many years ago. It was one of the first microprocessor controlled radios they sold.
It was a base model and very big in physical size.
I got it for $5 dollars as it was a return and non-functioning.
I remember hooking it up and shorting pins on the cpu in order to get it running.
I made contact with someone who claimed to be at the Isle of Crete.

That was the first and last time I ever talked to anyone on that radio!

I've been involved in radio since around 1978.
I've helped our local operators since that time.
I installed a 2 mtr repeater receiver at my work with a 220 Mhz link to the transmitter 3 miles away.
This was back in 1995 and I think the receive antenna was an IsoPole vertical.
The transmit antenna on 220 was a build that I constructed.
It was a simple yagi aimed at the main transmit site.
I don't remember what radis were used for the relay.
I do know the site used a old Kaypro machine for CW id.
I worked on it a bunch as the site owner was legally blind!

Today 28 years later, I'm still very much into radio.
I just never found the reason to need to talk.
So I'm very satisfied just listening.
I monitor almost everything.
I guess you could say from DC to Daylight!
I'm limited though as I'm in an apartment but they did let me put a discone up and I snuck a long wire in at the same time!
Plus I live on the top floor.
So monitoring is a pleasure.
