I replaced my aging standalone Westell modern and Multitech router with a Netopia 3346N I got on eBay. As others have said there many choices both new and used.

One recommendation is try to get a modem that supports ADSL2. That is second generation ADSL specification. It is backwards compatible with previous version. Verizon does not officially support ADSL2 but newer DSLAM line cards have it build in. Provides several enhancement that improve overall performance.
