| VOIP throughout the house
I have had Vonage for a couple of years, and at the beginning, I had the wiring hooked up so that I could plug a phone into any jack and be able to take and receive calls. Well we thought of cancelling Charter and going back to DSL, so I undid the settings and now I"m not sure what to do (we're still with Charter cable).
1. I went to my phone box outside my house and disconnected the line going from Verizon into my house (actually it was already taped up and disconnected, but I just made sure). 2. With my router connected to my cable modem, I then ran a phone line from my router to the nearest phone jack, which should be all I need to do to get a phone signal throughout my entire house.
However, when I plug a phone into a phone jack, I get symptoms I've never had before. The dial tone goes up and down in pitch, instead of being one steady tone. When I call, its as if I'm making two calls at once. I can hear the bell ringing, and yet, I also get a voice telling me that the phone call can't be connected, that I should hang up and try again.
I went around and removed all teh DSL filters, but that didn't help. |

| OK I solved it--I went back out to the phone box and disconnected BOTH lines. I assumed that one was incoming and the other was outgoing. Evidently not, as now that both lines are disconnected, everything is back to normal.
OK--anyone care to speculate what might have happened if I had left it like it was, with only one line disconected? Might that have caused damage to my router or phone? |

| I would think that you might have eventually damaged the VoIP adapter, since the other phone line was live and had voltage going to it.
As long as the adapter still functions properly, I think you'll be ok. -- Forget 'em, Support the Indies. »www.ind-music.com |

| reply to psaulm119 I did the same thing as you, maybe even worse. I didn't totally disconnect the outside line also and I left it plugged into the ATA for over a day. ATA is still working today.
But, your mileage may vary... -- Stay away from any and all Roger's products. |
