Cable Companies Have Grown Too Big

it not a question of cable companies getting to big,

its the attitude of those in charge of the cable companies think, getting as much $$$ out the consumer/CUSTOMER as they can get & returning as little service as they can get away with

How are the cable companies different from any other business? Every business is in business to make money -- it's not a charity game.

Huh? Are we talking about the same comcast?
The one I know has raised my speeds to over 20Mb..for NO price increase.
Dramatically increased channels...and given consumers a REAL choice for phone service..finally.

And done so..with some OUTSTANDING pricing that can literally get someone everything they offer for about 5 bucks a day.

HSI..digital phone..digital TV..5 premiums and all the sub premium channels..hdtv..dvr...on demand..

For less than the price of a mcd's value meal.

A loaf of bread and quart of milk.

A gallon and a half of gas...soon to probably be one gallon instead.

Or..every single thing that comcast offers.

Expensive?

No way.

It's this that AT&T and their sad pewverse rollout is afraid of.

And now..I guess this is all they have to resort to.

How sad is that?

Comcast needs to take this to the Supreme court.
AT&T needs to be shut down..dismantled..take ma Bell all apart again.

Martin needs to be fired.

Then justice will prevail.

Comcast raises cable TV rates
December 17, 2006
A customer with a standard cable package -- about 70 channels -- will see his or her monthly bill go from $51.90 to $54.25, company spokesman Marc Goodman said. He said high-speed Internet service would remain at $42.95 a month.

Comcast raises cable-only rates another 5%

Wednesday, October 17, 2007
»Re: here it is in news
The standard Comcast cable bill will go up $3 to $47.99
Digital classic subscribers will see their bills go up $5 to $60.99.
Those with bundles will see a bigger increase depending on the kinds of services they have.

When the Soapes signed up for the phone, Internet and digital cable bundle they got an entry level deal, but that was a year ago.

"When it started out is was $99.99 a month, now it's $180 a month," said Pam Soape.

When Comcast took over the Houston market this summer, [b]officials told us there would be no rate increase. Now just two months later,
A company spokesperson told us by phone that increasing the prices was "a decision made to closely align the Houston price to be more complimentary with Comcast prices around the nation."
A lot of that depends on what services you are getting, but there is a basic satellite package for around $20 a month. Remember rate increases are not exclusive to cable, they go up with satellite services too. Bills never seem to go down.

Actually, there are also good corporate citizens, too. At this level, it should also be about HOW you play the game.

Umm, last time I checked AT&T was also a cell phone company and they just acquired Cingular. Comcast is not currently in the mobile market. Your numbers don't mean anything until you break them down and show cable vs cable.

"the future" - wireless broadband

Wait 'till wireless reaches broadband levels, then who needs coax or twisted pair! Oh yeah, I forgot the FCC also regulates the air. Let me see, how many cable companies are in the wireless biz? How many telco's are? The writing is on the wall folks!

Re: Cable Companies Have Grown Too Big

Jazzy..i understand and respect your opinion and AGREE with you that when you look at the individual products by themselves and the way that prices have risen, it does leave something to be desired.

What I don't really agree with you on though is that they are either expensive necessarily..or not a good value.

Let's take a look at it.

Comcast HSI...42.95 month. Today, I get 20Mb and sometimes even 30Mb speeds with powerboost.

AT&T DSL @ 1.5 to 3Mb speeds. Maybe 15.00 month to 25.00 a month.

Who is REALLY the expensive one in that equation?
I think it is absolutely..positively..DSL that is the expensive option.
3Mb speeds for 25.00 a month versus almost TEN times that for just 18.00 a month more?
Who is the VALUE provider?

Comcast...and the cable co's. That's who.
It's the smoke and mirrors of the LOW price for the LOW service and the LOW speeds that the telco's provide that fools people. DSL might be the low PRICE ..but PRICE should not always rule the day. VALUE should rule it.

Standard TV service. 70 some odd channels.
50 a month to 54.00 a month. The prices went up.
I know it..because I paid the increase too.
I will totally agree with you that the price has risen over the years..in some cases..quite a bit.
And, that the VALUE of that package is somewhat questionable. But..what folks are doing is taking that A La carte..meaning standalone. And everything with both the cable co's and telco's can be on the pricey side when you do that. In addition..lets break it down. 50 a month equals 1.66 cents per day. For a company to bring us service.
Is that REALLY a lot when you think about it? Is it a lot when you have to factor in all their costs in order to do it? I really doubt they make much profit at all with that..and what we're really seeing is the impact of inflation..higher benefit costs..building costs..fuel costs..and whatever. Bottom line Jazzy..1.66 cents a day is equal to less than a mcd's Soda and in comparing it to everything we buy ..it's not that expensive.

But that's not what I've been talking about here Jazzy.
It's about where the REAL value is when you deal with these companies. The more i've looked at their packages..the more i can see that there is tremendous value in taking more from them. When you look at Comcasts top package..it takes that HSI pricing..TV pricing..digital tv ..hdtv..ALL the premium channels..DVR..and now telephone..AND all the long distance you can use..and wraps it into one.
And when you break THAT cost down..and compare it to all the other things we buy everyday and spend our money on..
There is a TON of value with going with these packages IMHO.
Comcast is NOT expensive when you factor in doing away with all those other things..and going with this company for all these services COMBINED.

Jazzy..think about it.
HBO.
Showtime.
Movie channel.
starz...
cinemax..
all the SUB movie channels off that..
digital Tv..
on demand...
20Mb + HSI...
DVR...
STANDARD cable...
TELEPHONE service..
LONG DISTANCE costs...
HDTV...
all for what amounts to..at least in my area..for about FIVE DOLLARS and change Per day.

Jazzy.
That is NOT expensive. It's a huge bargain..and a real value for just about everyone I could ever imagine.

Again..think about what we'd pay JUST for that standard cable. 50 to 55 a month.
you just said it yourself.
If you take just the pieces..it can QUICKLY add up to that 5.00 a day...and much more.
Just HBO is probably 15 a month or more by itself.

Buying A LA CARTE..from the cable co's is a bad idea.

Buying the whole thing together..and just saying NO to MA BELL...is the right answer.
