| DIR-655 Rebooting every 1-10 minutes.
I've had a DIR-655 for a while now, it's been running great. Then all of a sudden tonight, it started rebooting, it's prolly rebooted oh, 50+ times in the last couple hours, Nothing has changed on this end.
I tried upgrading to the newest firmware. it's still rebooting.
If anyone has any suggestions to try, i'd love to hear them. |

| reply to mhochman1 Now, Dlink was nice enough to send me a new one, and.. THE SAME EFFING THING IS HAPPENING, reboots every few minutes.
I restored factory defaults, keeps happening, i changed all network cables, still happening, i moved the power supply to a new power strip, still happening, i removed all computers from it and used the wireless only, still happening, i connected just my laptop to it, still happeneing.
The ONLY thing i've not yet changed, is my Modem, luckily i have the same service at work, so i'm about to go steal their modem to test. but if that doesn't work, i'm out of ideas, if ANYONE has any more, id be happy to hear them, |

| YEah i saw that from another post, and i've done it, and so far 15 minutes with no reboot.
It must be something in the newer firmware, as i had the router running for 6 months with no issues.
If it turns out to be wireless, then well, i hope they fix it in a new Firmware, as part of the whole reason i bought this thing was for the Wireless. |

@cox.net | reply to mhochman1 I've got the same reboot problem as you, except not quite as often. It reboots anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. I already know it's not a heat issue and disabling wireless entirely still causes the same problem. |

| reply to mhochman1 You need to upgrade the firmware of your router to fix the problem. The latest firmware of DIR-655 is only available in this site »ftp://customer@cainfo.dlink.ca Username: customer Password: dlinkcustomer look for the folder of DIR-655 and copy the firmware upload the firmware in your router. |

I had the same problems with all FW from 1.05 to 1.10 (incl.) |

| reply to mhochman1 Despite what some of you think it is more than likely a heat issue if it reboots and it does not stay online or working for very long. If it reboots and your good for hours then it may just be the firmware imo. However hardware problems can do crazy things regardless.
Putting a heat sink on my DGL-4300 has helped tremendously.
»Stickie: How to Fix the DGL-4300
It will cost you around $30 to fix or several hours and weeks of your time talking with Dlink and getting it RMA'd for another router that may end up having the same issue anyways.
The choice is yours... |

@bellsouth.net | reply to mhochman1 Try turning off the QoS engine. That's what stopped it for me. |

| reply to mhochman1 Here's my story...
It started rebooting for me yesterday all day. After speaking with 3 techs I finally returned the product and exchanged it for a new one. I come home with firware A2 1.02. and it started rebooting again. I turned my QoS engine OFF yesterday for a couple of hours and it never rebooted. Before going to bed yesterday I turned QoS back on and has NOT rebooted since.
I have no idea what is going on. Still praying that it continues to work!
PS I bought this unit Friday! |

| reply to glitchbit i doubt its a heat issue, since i'm using a replacement unit, it was working fine for months, and the problem only happens when WiFi is enabled on the unit.
I believed it was a heat issue on my old unit, and RMA'd it, but the new one they sent did the exact, and i mean EXACT same thing, right out of the box.
As for the QoS Suggestion, didn't work, neither did disabling UPNP. |

| I think heat is just one of the many superstitions that spring up when equipment behaves erratically. Heat is rarely the problem.
If I were you, I would reset the router to factory defaults (the factory tests devices most thoroughly with default settings), and then make the minimum amount of configuration changes to make the router do what you need.
If that stabilizes things, gradually add in the other features you want, one at a time, allowing time for problems crop up. If it remains stable for a week, try the next feature. If it starts crashing, disable that feature and try another.
UPnP seems to be a common source of instability in D-Link routers. This is not surprising, since UPnP clients can reprogram the router in bizarre ways, and the UPnP clients can themselves be buggy.
Another source of instability seems to be related to certain wireless game consoles. I have had bad luck with the Wii console and the PS3 console. They cause other wireless connections (e.g. laptops) to fail in various ways. If you have one of those, try turning off the wireless radio in the game device to see if things stabilize.
Finally, the internet is a hostile environment for any computing device. Hackers are incessantly trying to break into, damage or crash systems that they find. I have found that some of my router paroxisms are related to these attacks. Commercial routers are much more immune. |
