400 megabits to what?

Exactly what other node on the Internet are you going to connect to at 400mbps? Let me give you the answer. NO ONE! Once you are off your local ring you still connect back to the slow pokey backbone.

I could do a trial for 1Gbps fiber, but it wouldn't matter a diddly damn.

Right now maybe, but you have to start somewhere. If the residential areas are getting BPON/GPON then it's going to force out a bandwidth increase everywhere else. I also know that my average 4mbit DSL connection isn't maxing out the connection to whatever server I am connected to. Right now I'd take whatever max the server would give me.
