In my town (and in may others, I would imagine) there are only two providers of high-speed service. Not much competition there. As for Verizon's statements, well, I know some ex-Enron employees and investors in securities backed by subprime mortgages who might have a few wordsy about whether you bet the farm on a large corporation's promises. Another, different, part of Verizon's policy is to move everyone from copper to FIOS. The sum total is that when the copper is gone, so will be the DSL alternatives. Once the DSL alternatives are gone, there will be no reason for VZ to offer cheap fiber packages.
