caffeine_joe : Greetings, all. New member, here. Obviously a lot of knowledge that I hope to benefit from. Unfortunately I won't be able to contribute to said knowledge because I'm as thick as a brick when it comes things techy.

But to my point ... About 2 years ago, I did sign a three contract in order to get a laptop for my daughter. I recently contacted Telus about switching to from my present "High Speed Enhanced" to "High Speed Extreme" and was told it would cost me $480.00 to cancel my existing plan. This seems odd, as typically when you upgrade to a better service, there's no charge as long as you commit to another long term contract.

Has anyone else experienced this?

All the best..

Joe

anon : I just got the free desktop a few days ago.
After 5 weeks waiting for it I called Telus and 2 days later it was shipped. Shipping took 7 days.
The 80gb hard disk is loaded with tons of Trial offers from MS, Corel, Symantec, AOL etc etc.. Takes up about 35GB.
The computer is unusable with the Basic 512 ram it comes with - unless you only want to run a basic editor and type very slowly :). Waiting for it to start up etc. while setting up and deleting unwanted offers is painfully slow.

I have ordered extra ram ( not from Telus/Lenova as its too expensive from them). It will probably speed up one I get the extra ram installed.
It only shows 448mb ram but the chip is 512 so possibly 64mb is used for the onboard graphics.
There are no cards everything is on the motherboard and all the card slots are empty. There are also 2 unused SATA connections. There is no floppy drive installed, just the HD and a DVD/CD reader/CD writer.
Installed on the network with no problems and once we have the extra ram, printer and DVD writer installed I am hoping it will be a second PC for anyone else in the house to use.

Lakebottom : I just called Telus about my billing and I was rather disapointed with the answers I was getting.
The service contract I signed for one year expired at the end of November, which I was enticed into by a free '2wiregateway'. New year and I am looking for a new deal.
The deal I was offered was another 5.00 discount for a one year contract, that's it. The problem is however the 5.00 discount would be applied to the old rate.....what the heck is this all about....the old rate doesn't exist I'm done that contract, I'm a free agent....
I was also offered 6.0 at my current rate. 6.0 is apparently now available in Sylvan Lake. Nobody called me, nobody notified me, nobody offered me an introductory offer..come on they started this perk game so where is the perk.
;)

The Shaw website is offering 29.95 for 6 months and the first 30 days for free. It's a 5mb down/ 512 up package. No wireless router promo, so I guess I would need to buy a new router if I make the call. Financially its a better deal;however, technically it could be a poorer service for me personally because I am surrounded by Shaw users. I have been told that the queueing problem for Internet access has been resolved..by a Shaw field technician. I think I'll just discuss it with the neighbours to see if they are happy with their Shaw service and what the problems are with their connection.
--
Alberta Lakes belong to all Albertans not just the developers!

JammerMan79 : Just so everyone is clear.. the main Q4 promo is NOT the computer/laptop promo. It's the discounted adsl service of 19.95 for 6mo and the regular price is 35.95 (3.0 plan of course).

The alternate promo is the computer or laptop purchase deal where you get a discounted computer/laptop and the ability to pay it over the 3yr term. We have specifically been told not to say it's a free computer/laptop.
Telly Boot : Well, Jammerman is right: the additional charge is $5 x 36 months for the desktop and $14 x 36 months for the Laptop, which works out to $504. Some freebie! This is for a Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop with a Celeron processor and 512 Mb of RAM. For Vista 1Mb of RAM is a minimum, and preferably 2Mb. Upgrading the processor to at least a 1.66Ghz Core 2 Duo, which most laptops come with nowdays, and upgrading the ram would be about $200 or more. So yes, it's a very basic laptop for $504, but as a "free gift" it's on a par with the old HN DLink 604 router which was described by Telus as a $140 value.
Review of a similar Lenovo 3000 C200 laptop, but with a Core2Duo processor here: »www.notebookreview.com/default.a···ovo+C200
I guess for some people it would be a fairly painless way of getting a basic laptop, but Telus is not exactly spelling it all out for customers.
--
Dawn,n,The time when men of reason go to bed.
