Use a non-Qwest ISP and pay Qwest for it...

We are currently connected to Earthlink DSL through a Qwest wire, however no DSL connection charge shows up on our Qwest bill. Apparently Qwest is not part of the Earthlink arrangement, unless they pay Qwest separately. Is this how it works?

If I am connected to Earthlink, why do I need Qwest to connect to another ISP? Let's say I want Speakeasy or Zianet, why would I need to pay Qwest and also Speakeasy both? Someone explain please, I'm a little confused.

Couple possibilities. Earthlink has its own equipment at the CO and is just paying Qwest for the DRY loop. Or Earthlink has no equipment and is paying Qwest for everything. Either way Earthlink is paying Qwest for at least a dry loop if you are running over Qwest lines.
Just more of a billing thing and how the ISPs want to market themselves and if they have a colocate at the CO or DSLAM.

It is very simple. You pay one for the pipe(qwest) and one for the water through it(mirthlink). You are probably used to paying for dial up through say MSN or [shudder] AOHell. It really is the same deal you paid them for the dial up access, but you still had to pay your phone company virilzon, SBC, or qwest, for a phone line. The arangment here is that you are just getting a faster speed. FYI The best value in an ISP if you are getting your DSL connection through qwest is qwest.net. Next time you talk to your phone company rep. ask for it and pass the savings you would have spent on the ISP to a faster connection. It'll be worth your while. You may have a concern about your email address, but there are plenty of free ones out there even ones you can use for pop access (gmail). Or there is email hosting if you want an address of your own.

Whoops Yes earthlink has an relationship with qwest they lease the DSL line from qwest and then resell it to you. They'll tell you the same if you ask the tech support person that you talk to in Bangalore
