Not as rare as you might think. The smiley aspect is cool, but birds often fly either in unison strokes or opposite strokes. Kinda like joggers.

True, the basic aspect of unison bird strokes might be common, but as natedj said there are hundreds of factors that would have turned this photo into just another photo of birds flying. Capturing birds flying in just this way, at just this angle, with just this number of birds, etc, is very rare.
