The Snowman :

Well you may have answered your own question:

"yesterday I installed Zone Alarm and it seems to be stopping something "

ok I am not "up" on Vista so take whatever I say with a ton of salt.

First off: I just was reading in a Thread here at the forum that ZA does not work well with Vista.....I don't know if it does or not but that seems like a good place to start.....re-move zone alarm and see if that corrects the problem. As for re-format.....most likely you can avoid
that.

An yes I did notice this comment:

"After I made the post yesterday I installed Zone Alarm "

nevertheless you may have worsen the issue if ZA does not run properly on Vista.

Did you do any of the suggestions I offered ? If not then you are just wasting your time until you do. You said ZA seems to have stop "something" and that "something" may be found in your start-up. It could takes days to explain every reason for making certain suggestions.....but only seconds for you to try them.

Since I am not "up" on Vista I am going to bow out of this Thread and leave it to someone who knows Vista. Good luck friend.

Also read the Links the always beautiful LaLuna provided.

Amr : Sorry about the lack of basic info I should've known better.

I'm running a Compaq Laptop with 1.5GB of memory with Windows Vista Home Premium. After I made the post yesterday I installed Zone Alarm and it seems to be stopping something because I'm able to watch two videos on my screen at once without one of them slowing down. Also I was able to have a conversation with my dad but it still intermittently kept breaking up.

I have no idea how to check event viewer, I googled it and it I couldn't find anything related to Vista all of it was XP related. My internet seems to be consistent because my downloads are usually good and constant with no interruptions.

I don't want to reformat, I've gotten my computer to how I finally want it, its like a well oiled machine with a slight problem. reformat is an extreme last resort.

I've taken everything out of the startup and running processes that dont' need to be running, I also researched some of the processes that I didn't recognize and de-activated some because they didn't need to be running. I was thinking the same thing with the graphics, Vista is alot of eye candy but I don't really have anything running except for the sidebar which uses minimum resources and I don't have any other graphic intensive programs running.

Thanks for the replies so far.
--
Mastering others is strength.
The Snowman :

Before anyone can offer you any advice/suggestions the operating system you are using would be a "need to know".

In the meantime....you can go to Start>Run> and type "MSCONFIG" then when the new window opens look for "Start-Up on the top right side. Take a peek at what programs are starting and running each time you start your computer. People often Run programs at Start-up that is not needed.....FE: "printer"......MS Office..... re-moving these programs from Start-up DOES NOT RE-MOVE THE PROGRAMS and these Programs will will work as usual when needed. The only change is that the Programs are no longer draining the computers resources by "running" in the Background when not being in actual use. This would apply to ANY operating system. Also, if you do not know do not do. Any program that you are not sure of or not sure if it should be Running....do not touch! Since this is not a security issue you may want to ask for advice on the "Start-up" issue in the proper forum where you may receive more help/suggestions on "Start-up".

Secondly: Graphics consume alot of resources on XP. Unless you actually want all the "eye-candy" you can tweak to improve.

Yahoo Mess......have you properly tweaked to your benefit ? Its been years since I used that program but no doubt not much has changed about it.

Thats about all I can offer not knowing your operating system. But do not be frustrated things can usually be improved. But remember "if you do not know do not do".

Amr : So recently my computer has been acting pretty sluggish which was weird because I have it to defrag once a week, virus scan every morning, windows defender checks for spyware every morning so I was a bit surprised when it was slowing down. I went ahead and decided to do a little cleanup, I did the following;

Defragmented with Windows
Spyware scan with Spybot S&D
Checked my disk for errors with windows
Ran CCleaner and let it do what it needed to do

After that my computer was running a bit smoother but I was still have issues where whenever I played a video file with two media players open it would be slow as hell, and whenever I tried talking to someone on Yahoo Messenger it wouldn't come through clear because I was thinking something was loading. I opened up task manager and started ending processes that I didn't need open that still didn't work but I did notice that my computer was working constantly but the memory usage was in the low 40's so it wasn't even using the memory effectively.

Only thing I can see is that something is bogging me down, I din't know if this is the right forum or not but I was hoping I could get some advice on what to do or if I can prod some brains in here to help me out. Thanks in advance and if you have any questions please ask because I'm starting to get annoyed!
--
Mastering others is strength.
