Please. "forced" haha. Yes forced. Perhaps you missed the part where the NFL is trying to get the politicians to force Comcast to carry the NFL Network on basic tiers. Perhaps you missed the part where ALL these same companies are perfectly willing to let MLB "force" them to carry MLB Channel on basic tiers so they can still offer Extra Innings. Now if it's wrong for non-sports fans to subsidiize football how is some ok to subsidize baseball? Until these companies can explain their hypocrisy they can get of their righteous high horse.
As I said if the NFL came out TODAY and said "Ok carry us on basic tier and you can offer Sunday Ticket" these same companies would say OK and have ZERO issue with having the non-sports fan subsidize NFL Network. Anyone that believes otherwise is an idiot.
The fact is these companies are mad that the NFL extended thier deal with DirectTV 2 years ago until 2011. This is their way of paying the NFL back. The whole "It's not fair to make non-fans pay 70 cents a month" line is BS. These companies want Sunday Ticket. They know that this is a way to make sure the NFL doesn't negotiate another exclusive deal with DirectTV again. It's a game of chicken. The cable companies are betting that there won't be a big enough outcry from NFL fans before 2011 to force them into accpeting a deal before the NFL says they can have Sunday Ticket. The NFL is betting there will be. Who blinks first?
Fact is if the NFL came back and said "Ok you can NFL Network on a sports tier" those caable companies would be f*cked. Their bluff would have been called. They couldn't refuse on the basis of "Only sports fan should pay" because they would be. Especially when they said they would add it if they could put it on a sports tier. But if they do that they have almost ZERO negotiating power when it comes to getting Sunday Ticket at that point. |
