[CA] college access to cox email via outlook

I have a kid that is going to UCSB and she can receive email from her cox.net email address, but she can't send anything out across smtp. Is there a way to fix this or is SOL?

From campus she will not be able to send email thru Cox's Smtp servers...

She will need an campus smtp server or another free one...

I think Yahoo has a few you can use

Not for the 'yahoo.com' and 'yahoo.ca' domains. SMTP service requires a Yahoo! Mail Plus account, at $19.99 per year. Most of the Yahoo! Mail CC TLDs offer free SMTP access for the price of a subscription to Yahoo! Delivers. For English speakers, two of those are 'yahoo.co.uk', and 'yahoo.com.au'. I have an account at the latter; and one at 'yahoo.co.jp' as well, which requires a modest ability to read Japanese.

AOL Mail ('aim.com', 'aol.com', and 'netscape.net' domains; I believe that they are only accepting new accounts in the 'aol.com' domain at this time), and Gmail have SMTP message submission servers with free access.

Thanks AZwldcat. Also, she can just use webmail.cox.net to check and send from Cox email. That's all I use anymore.

If her computer is connected to the campus network, then Cox won't allow her to use the Cox SMTP server for outbound email. Use of the cox smtp server is only allowed if you are actually connected to cox's network. This prevents "outsiders" from using Cox SMTP servers for spamming purposes.

Assuming the campus provides an SMTP server students can use for outgoing email, she can change her outlook settings to use the campus SMTP server to send mail. She would leave her return address unchanged as xxxx@cox.net

or sign up for a gmail account and use it solely for the SMTP server...

Or ditch Cox and use Gmail wherever she is

agreed.

I don't know why people use ISP based email any more... It always been more headaches than its worth esspecially if you move or change ISPs...

Agree 100%

This is where I insert my "plug" for the FastMail e-mail service.

You don't get SMTP message submission free from Fastmail.

Some ISPs ('at&t Yahoo! HSI' and Comcast, among them) offer SMTP AUTH servers which can be accessed from outside of their IP networks. For those who want to use their ISP email services, that is a nice feature.

it depends on da college... tried to use both smtp, college & cox... and no success.

not important

@cox.net

You can use Gmails smtp server, but the return address will show the gmail account. Alternately you can pay for smtp redirection with several vendors. If you have a web hosting account, you may have that already included at no additonal cost (Go Daddy as example). There is usually a limit on the number of redirected messages per day. We road warriors have the same issue when traveling. The redirection works for me.

Actually, no. I use GMail for my work email and for my personal email addresses. You can ask gmail to send mail as a different email address in the account. Gmail will send an email off to that address, and if you click the verify link, it will allow you to send mail like it's from that email address, but through gmail's server.

Not if you set up Gmail properly.
Note that, while your GMail email address shows up in the "Return-Path:" header line, it does not show up in the "From:" line, which is displayed by the client.
