I have since canceled my 15/2 business fios (within my 30 day trial) and opted for 15/15 residential for half the price. I really don't care If i need 2 ONTs installed to have fios TV in the future. Although they did make it clear when I cancelled that FIOS TV will be available for business customers after the new year but at "Business Prices"

Yeah, they are totally screwing over their business customers. I still maintain they want to keep their T3/DS3 business, which costs businesses a HECK of a lot more than a FiOS connection. I don't see them offering these speeds anytime soon, they apparently have no intention of keeping their business customers happy.

Yuuichi : It took me three days of calling Verizon to get my 30/15 upgrade. Apparently the system didn't think that speed tier was available in my area, so I eventually got through to a supervisor in the tech. support area and the problem was solved within about 2 hours of speaking to him.

All together, considering other people's problems, I'm pretty happy that I got my upgrade within a few short days.

Really happy with it too, although I wish it was 50/20 instead of 30/15 ;)

draven : I'm in Warrington, Bucks County, PA. I called yesterday and asked what new speed packages were available. The agent put me on hold for about 7 minutes and came back and told me the 15/15 package was available for $69.99.

I asked to be upgraded. She said she was putting a work order in and to expect the upgrade within 24 hours. I noticed it hit within a couple of hours. Here's my results:

Well Im in the same boat - called and asked for the 15/15 upgrade - the account page shows its complete. The Support folks say that the account is upgraded. yet I get about 11,000 down and 800-1000 up ... No change

The ONLY speedtest that shows anywhere near the old speed of 15/2 is the verizon.net/speedtest is that one - Every other speedtest that is actually on the internet is in the 10 mb/1mb range - which means that Verizons internet facing routers are not keeping up ...

I called support and they said someone will call tomorrow -Im not going to hold my breath...

I have had FIOS internet and TV for years and as time goes on the support has fallen WAY off. for those reasons I can no longer strongly recommend it to friends and family like i used to

Again, after running the speed test (at verizon) did you run the Fios Optimizer? That is what got my speed up to where it should be....

Same happened to me. After 1.5 hours on the phone with Verizon, I gave up. Then I noticed at speedtest.verizon.com after I ran the test at the bottom there was a "Fios Optimizer" link. I installed it, it did it's thing, I rebooted and bam...I'm at 15/15...Wish I wouldn't have sat on the phone with VZ...LOL

just 15/2 which we have or 15/15 for $15/mo then what we are paying now so not worth it just for faster upload even though I do some uploading and its painfully slow, its uploading by choice not a neccesity so i prob just wont do it. rather have 20/5.

i'd take the 15/15 for faster up if it was same price or slightly more but not for $15/mo. asked for a deal or discount being that 20 down is not available yet in our area and rep said were already getting double discounts or someting and she woudln't be able to do anything. I wouldn't want to mess up whatever deal we currently are locked in with just to get faster up.

next choice is 30 down and i guess 5 up for an exhorbitant cost. its double the down speed but more then double the price. Its more for businesses.

oh well. she said 20 down should be coming eventually to PA. i guess thats the whole state gets at same time? wouldn't the Philadelphia areas be a priority on their list for PA and nationwide being the 5th largest city?

she acts like its by the state but it seems to be by the neighborhood as i know developments down the street that dont have fios at all. guess were lucky to have fios at all even if the only thing worthwhile is the internet service as their tv service sucks.

not to mention the high probabability of your service going down for as long as 48hrs when you try to upgrade which sounds like a nightmare.

tried online live customer help to no avail also. Comcast has 24hr support and you get right through. verizon isn't open most of the time and when they are your on hold for hours just for them to probably screw up anyway.

If not, you need to log into your account on VZ.com

Then, go to your Internet package, and there will be a link to "Upgrade Plan".

Then, choose the upgrade package you want - go through all the screens - get an order ticket number, etc.

currently 15/2 in the Phila. PA area which has higher speeds now avail for a couple weeks but can't find where to upgrade.

I need faster upload then 2 and wouldn't mind faster down then 15 but i think its going to be choice between 20/5 or 15/15 if i can ever find where to do it on the site.

danclan : OK the more i see the pricing the angrier I am getting. Its now showing 30/15 for 140$. Thats nearly 3x what i am paying now for 30/5 (55$).

The online option to upgrade at 89$ a month is already gone. hell that wasnt even a week. That also only applies apparently to new customers only. My options are severely limited as an existing customer.

I had better be grandfathered in when my contract expires in May of next year or I will be very very unhappy.

SkipMDMan : Are you sure about the nonbundling? When I talked to the person on the billing end I was told it would be $15 a month more than my current cost. I have the 15/2 for $49.99 currently but I have the bundle that gives me a discount for each product.

Since she said $15 more and not like $20 more, I am assuming I'm still getting the bundle discount?

That is of course assuming they ever figure out on their end how to make changes in my service. I was told they had to create a "trouble" ticket just to get all my services on the same bill although when the lady checked it showed that I had all 3 services with the monthly discounts. I was told once they managed this, I would receive a callback to upgrade me to the 15/15 service.

Sounded very odd to me, my account shows all 3 but she can't find the individual internet part of it.

If I don't hear back today I'll be calling again, maybe a different person will have a different result.

Now that is currently $35/month more then what Im paying for 20/20.... and honestly, there is NO need for 50MBits down.

There aren't too many places that will send to you at anywhere near that download speed. If they would have made it 50/30 or 50/40 I would have jumped on it. But I will stay very happy with my 20/20.

ARKx : Sorry to interrupt but,
fiosguy1, or anyone else working for Verizon or VZ PA fBA, do you know if the symmetric FiOS at 15Mbps is covered with the FiOS Double Freedom, and if so 2 things:
1) What exactly is the discount?
2) How is it applied when ordering online through the back-door qualification method, NOT through the »www.verizon.net/fios qualification tool.
3) When ordering should we select one of the contracts, or a month to month plan, when already on a Double Freedom bundle?

Thanks in advance, because it's a little annoying trying to find out since we currently don't have FiOS Internet, and when I check the National Freedom Bundles site it only spits back DSLow at 3Mbps, which we already have. Also, that Double Freedom bundle went through perfectly, we just downloaded our November Bill. So I assume we can simply add the FiOS speed tier we want ang go from there.

On mine... i am still getting 20/5...not 20/20.

unsure why. I have changed routers...changed pc's all mtu settings are right...just so on my end i cover everything...changed ethernet cables...restarted router..releases reneewed ip address...

looks like i am calling verizon again tomorrow.

She said it would take a few days and because of the holiday I would have to wait until Tuesday to hear from them. WTF? 1+ week for a speed upgrade?

I've seen FCC filings of DSL prices. That's why I'm thinking it applies to FIOS as well.

SGR : Just a word of advice to anyone upgrading your speed in your profile. Pay attention to every charge! While upgrading online and selecting the 15/15 package it originally told me it would cost $64.99. When I got to the final page where all you have to do is submit it to take affect, I noticed it was $79.99! I quickly canceled out of it and called to order and got it for it for $64.99 without any hassle from the rep.

The reason is the average no-nothing person might see Comcast's offering of 16Mbps and think they are getting more. From a pure marketing standpoint 20Mbps would stand much better against Comcast.

danclan : I dont think internet traffic is tariffed. Phone yes, FCC regulates TV as well but they can offer you any internet bundle they want. I don't believe they file tariffs regarding internet access for consumers or even businesses other than those currently regulated ala T1 and other circuit based traffic connections Etc....and even those have been less and less subject to tariff filings if im not mistaken.

Angerphile : Hmm. I'm a bit annoyed with my upgrade. My speed is sorta... sad.

That was without ANY traffic beside the speedtest going.

Now, I -DO- get the speeds up to around 1.5MB/s that I've clocked myself. (Actually, I've gotten to the 15mbit level using iperf) However, I'm having to use multiple threads. As I'm getting around 100-200KB/s upload on average per thread. No more than that. Even to other FIOS customers.

I'm going to try calling sales to see if they have any info on either a symmetrical plan or a speed bump. I called the number on my bill yesterday, but they transferred me around/etc and I think I got a tech support person, not someone from sales. :huh:

No kidding. I did a little googling, and found this press release from Verizon (a little dated --May 2006) that shows Verizon upgraded existing business customers in NY, NJ and CT..

20 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream (increased from 15/2), for the former 15 Mbps prices of $59.95 a month with a dynamic IP address and $99.95 a month with static IP address.

So maybe there is SOME hope for business customers after seeing this residential upgrade. Maybe Reps just don't want to release the info

They tech support guy...nathan he went buy...says that the upgrade is pending for today...he says it did not affect my service going down...yeah ok right... they said i was in an outage... ok yeah they said this before... i had to call 6 times last time and they had to come out and it took 2 days... so i have no phone...no internet... and all i wanted was 20/20...the tech guy had no interest in helping he just repeated his script 6 times... anon : yeah well i just did the upgrade and now my phone and internet are down. I did it online and i did not think it went through becuase it said call customer service. So i called and they said yep you are all set. The speed never kicked in. So it was late so i went to bed. This morning...no dial tone... no nothing...cable might be slower but at least it works. never had these issues with cable. This is now the 4th time i am down in 5 months..

SGR : One thing I've noticed is some programs just can't handle the uploads. A lot of speedtest sites test upload so fast its hard for them to get an accurate reading. I tried sending a file over aim v5.5 and it would max out at 150KB/s. I switched over to Trillian and suddenly maxed out my friends connection at 1000KB/s. I've noticed the same with a few FTP clients too. FlashFXP worked the best. I averaged 1900KB/s! Pretty cool though. I'm a musician and upload videos and Mp3's of mine from time to time to friends. No more long waits while doing so! ;)

What do you get when you run:

sysctl net.inet.tcp | grep -iE '(sendspace|recvspace)'

If it's OS X, that should return the current send and receive buffer sizes respectively. You can then use:

sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.sendpsace=...

and

sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.recvspace=...

To set new values.

I will look into getting a residential connection instead. With 15Mbit upload and saving $35/mo, I can just get a hosted service and upload my pictures to the hosted server instead of serving them from my home machine. Sad that they'd rather have me pay $35/mo less for 7.5x upload than to let me get this speed plan on a business line. :huh:

On another note, for some reason I got a new router today via UPS. No idea why, my old one is working perfectly. I gave her the account number that was on the receipt in the box with the new router.

She claimed to have found all the accounts, eventually. Even though all the accounts are on the same phone number. Not sure why they didn't all show at the same time. I have yet to get a bill that shows all of them since I just signed up for the TV service.

SkipMDMan : Well, I had some fun today with trying to order the upgrade. Even more "fun" than I had expected.

Timeline-
FIOS internet early Sept (no TV offered then)
FIOS TV 11-7 with Triple play discounts

Called today to upgrade the 15/2 to 15/15, the lady I spoke with couldn't locate the internet portion of my account, in spite of the fact that it showed all the discounts and said I had it. There was a ticket opened the day after I had the TV installed, no idea what that was about.

Finally, after 30 min on phone the lady told me she had to create a trouble ticket to put all my billing together and that it would take 3 days or so for it to be resolved before I could get the upgrade. She has promised to call me back when it's ready to go.

One other problem, I originally signed up online for the internet, was getting $10 off a month. Mentioned it to the lady, after going on hold she said that she was told that the system would still recognize it but that she would add a manual $10 credit just in case. She didn't seem too worried that I would get $20 off, she said if it happened not to be concerned.

So now to see if anyone calls me back on Friday (even I don't expect a call on Thanksgiving) to tell me they are upgrading my speed.

If there are still problems with it, I would be better off to cancel all my FIOS services, get a new phone number and start over. Then I could go online and get the discounted 15/15 speed.

KA3SGM : I did call and answer my own question, the contract obligates you to the Internet service for the 1 or 2 year term, not the higher speed tier.

If something better comes along you can change to that, or if the symmetrical tier ain't worth the $15 they are charging for it you can go back to where you were.

Still under contract for the free settop box until March, and with the 15/2 still $49.99/mo as long as I have Verizon TV and phone, I might try an experiment and see what/if the 15/15 does for my Internet connection.

It's not like I'm going to give up on Fios Internet for a long time or anything, but I really want to hold out for 20/5 or 30/5 for little or no added cost.

The 30/15 does sound interesting.... :D

Hopefully Comcrap will throw a 'Hail Mary' 47Mbps 'power boost' pass at Verizon's latest publicity stunt, or announce some channel bonded pre-DOCISS 3.0 offerings before the end of the year, to make this get fun really fast.

Today (Nov 19th) I noticed that online I was able to get the 30/15 package for $94.95 a month but when I called the CSR with some questions she said I could get the 30/5 for $54.95. I figured I rarely upload large files so the cost savings of 12 X $40 = $480 was to big to pass up.

Got an install date of Nov 30th.

Chris123NT : Called VZ and got my 20/20 boosted to 50/20 (yes, the extra downstream really helps lol). Finally got a guy who could push it through after the first rep said it wasn't in the order system yet, and well:

And thats with an upload going (although the person on the other end is rather slow lol)

Based on the overhead loss I see on the 15/2 package (Usually see around 1750 up) - and what I saw when I had my secret 15/5 tier for 7 months (usually saw around 4500) - i'm not expecting to see much more than 14000 up (if that).

Looks like your results are pretty nice. In about 5 hours i'll know for sure. ;)

Yep. :( Sucks...but I guess they don't want to eat into their bottom line, as people on T* connections with them would bail to save hundreds (thousands?) a month, and say to hell with the SLA and just get another service as a backup. :D

The 15/15 seems pretty lame unless they let you run servers, but the extra 5Mbps down would be worth it.

I'd give them $15.00/mo more for 20/5 option, instead of 15/15.

Does the contract obligate you to that speed tier, or just to the Fios Internet for the time period? IOW, if 15/15 didn't make a difference, could you go back to 20/5, 15/2, 10/2, 5/2, without the ETF??

Same here in FL. I wonder if they did so because nobody was buying it. 20/5 for $49.99 or 50/5 for $139.99 (IIRC).

There was zero upload advantage compared to the (much cheaper) 20/5, and unless you are the world's most chronic downloader, I never saw the appeal.

In other words, symmetrical FIOS Internet is *the real deal*.

I live in Prince George's County, MD (the portion of the county where FIOS Internet has been available for a year, and TV for a little over half that) and we have new pricing:

Fios Internet alone is $30 (5/2), $40 (15/2) or $50 (15/15) with a two-year agreement, annual agreements are $5 more.

Double FIOS (Internet and TV) are $60/70/80 (same speed tiers) for two years; add $10 for one-year agreements.

Now if VZ can straighten out the billing errors, Comcast should be afraid. *Very afraid.*

The prequal tool for residential is showing the 15/15 plan for my address, but nothing new on the business page, except the message I pointed to. I don't remember seeing that before...but it may have been there all the time. I also entered my address to get to that page, so I'm not sure why it'd tell me to enter it to see the other plans?

I imagine they are very separate groups, but if you happen to know anyone on the business side, do you think you could find out if the 15/15 package will be available for business lines anytime soon? rebus9 : Someone at VZ can't do basic math. Price for internet-only service at 20/20 is $69.99. In one column they say $10 off months 2-7. In the next column they say $54.99 for months 2-7, which is a $15 discount. FIOS chat drone said it's $15 discount, but he seemed more interested in getting the order started right away. His "out" was that if I'm not happy with what I get (we only IM'd about price) that I can cancel in the first 30 days. Then he again tried to get me to place the order right away.

Also, now that 20/20 is here, the 50/5 option was removed.

UPDATE: I see this in the fine print at the bottom of the page. "Monthly rate of $44.99/$54.99/$64.99 applies to months 8-12 (for one year plan)"

So which is it, $64.99 or $69.99? Their website says both.

Will these states with the symmetrical tiers now be allowed for business fios in the same area? Currently the business Fios in my area of PA is only 5/5, 15/2 and 30/5. So I'm wondering if these tiers are a possible reality now. I'm sure this has been long awaited in the business community that are watching the residential fios progress and then wonder "wheres the business love?". I just happen to be one of those people looking for a hug, hehe.

As for the above location a 1 static IP on a 15/2 business line is 99$. Hopefully if they add these tiers for business a 15/15 would be in the $110-$120 range or less?! one can wish.

Thanks... I hope that's true in FL as well. One of the phone drones I spoke with said "it shouldn't be more than $10 or $15". (They must have shoved their hand elbow-deep up their butt to pull out an answer that whacked.)

It surprises me that nobody I spoke with or IM'd at VZ could answer that question. It only took a few minutes before you good folks at the BBR forums answered the question once and for all.

Easy way of testing this, go to their business website for fios, and type in your address or someone elses, and see what you get ;)

It's not about chose ones or any of that nonsense. Northern Virginia is in the same boat, and is surely not an undesirable market for Verizon. They offer us the 30/5 service at a reduced price - surely because we're a competitive market, but we don't have (and won't get) a 20mbps tier.

It seems like they offered the 30/5 tier for $55 in my area because Comcast has the 30mbs Powerboost in my area. But with the Powerboost after 20 or 30 seconds it drops down to 8mbs. And the regular cost is $52 a month.
So the FIOS 30/5 was a no brainer. The only bad thing is it doesn't qualify for a package deal so I can only get the double play for my TV and phone to save $18, instead of having the triple play and saving $5 to $8 off my internet.

wolfsmane : a new WMart just open here in s.carolina, and they have a big display offering verizon fios. they say its coming soon.
but when i check online, it shows not available.
how can i find out if and when its coming here? i was gonna be changing my broadband service, but will hold on if this is gonna be available.

That was in an official press release when they upgraded Florida, and Verizon has had foot-in-mouth ever since.

GeekNJ : I don't recall if there was any official announcement about 20/20 either at least until after people could call in and order it. What about the update from 15/2 to 20/5? Was that announced prior to folks being told from inside sources?

I don't recall so maybe they were both announced before, but maybe they were?

We see 20/20, we say omg let me get it, and all of a sudden here we are paying about $25/month more then the cable we had. And now only that now we are Verizon's customer. They are now not only bringing people in left and right, but making a hell of a lot more from those same people who use to be with someone else. Dont you love there strategy on getting customers and making more per month.

GeekNJ : It seems to me to be a game of cat and mouse. Just like in poker, you don't always go 'all in' even if you know you have the winning hand.

If FIOS puts out a tier and another provider (say Cablevision in this example) is able to match, in order to be the 'leader' they need to again up their tier. So if they go higher then they had to, and Cablevision matches or exceeds them, then they have to go even higher to move back ahead. If they move ahead by a little, and another provider leap frogs them, then they can again up the ante.

I don't know what the standard tiers from all these other providers in other states are, but if Verizon is leap frogging them, then that is what they are shooting for. I'm guessing there isn't a technical reason, maybe other then current aggregated bandwidth out of each CO that they can't offer the same tiers across the country. Maybe they already had more bandwidth out of the CO's in CV land?

No, I don't have 20/20. I have 20/5 which was upgraded from the 15/2 service I have had since it became available to my home.

I'd really like to know how many of you folks are getting 15/15 or just like to complain?

If that's the case why isn't my neighborhood in Wilmington getting charged less than they are charging people in Angola in southern DE? We're much more densely populated, surely we should be charged less or get more speed, right?

New Jersey has the highest population density in the U.S. at 1,138 people per square mile. New York state is #6 at 402 (26403 for NYC area) and Delaware is #7 at 401 people per square mile.

If that's the case why isn't my neighborhood in Wilmington getting charged less than they are charging people in Angola in southern DE? We're much more densely populated, surely we should be charged less or get more speed, right?

Not until sometime in 2008.

Many customers in VA already have 30/5 for $55/mo so for them this may not be the greatest deal. You pay $10/mo more for half the downstream and 3x the upstream.

Just be aware that you won't see that full 15Mbps upstream outside of your region. When transferring files across the country (east coast to west), you'll rarely see more than 5Mbps.

Deblin, No actually, gas prices are cheaper in NJ, plus they pump the gas for you.

They get 20/20 for the same price you will get 15/15 for.

Depending the size of your gas tank, and the bridge toll, you at least can drive to NJ and pay less at the pump, and get better service for it.

Verizon don't play like that.... :mad:

Now I just wish I understood that if I entered a 2 year contract - if there are speed upgrades during that time (and the 20/20 goes away, if I get the bump to the new speed or not)

I quizzed a phone rep about this, and was told the price DOES increase; specifically, it goes to the month-to-month rate. The way to avoid this is to sign up for another 1 or 2 year agreement.

Now we all know VZ is not bashful about price increases, so YMMV.

I'm waiting for the day they have everyone hooked on super-fast uploads that cable cannot match. Then they'll start taking some fat price increases, knowing that people will complain but won't switch to cable because they're hooked on the speed that only FIOS can deliver.

Seriously, I'm betting that VZ will become the neighborhood crack dealer, in a manner of speaking. Get you "hooked bad", then jack up the price.

Who told you you'd get a free upgrade? I think if they went 20/5 you'd get a free upgrade which is what happened to me. But 15/15 isn't an "upgrade" of 15/2. It's a different tier.

It says there's $15 off for the first month if you're an existing 10/2 or 20/5 FIOS customer. You can't upgrade online and you need to call in.

It says the $64.99 rate is for FIOS Internet 1 or 2 year term customers with Verizon voice service. Then it says "Rate increases after term period." The wording is odd and one would imagine, unless they already anticipate a higher rate that it would say "Rate may increase after term period."
