Mail CC TLDs offer free SMTP access for the price of a subscription to Yahoo! Delivers. For English speakers, two of those are 'yahoo.co.uk', and 'yahoo.com.au'. I have an account at the latter; and one at 'yahoo.co.jp' as well, which requires a modest ability to read Japanese.
AOL Mail ('aim.com', 'aol.com', and 'netscape.net' domains; I believe that they are only accepting new accounts in the 'aol.com' domain at this time), and Gmail have SMTP message submission servers with free access.
