said by maxfield :said by macedon :how would you rate this one in comparison to SpeedTouch 516 v6? Hard to say, I haven't personally used the Dlink DSL-2320B. However, the DSL-2320B has official support for ADSL2+ Annex M which increase the upstream from 1 mbps to 3.5 mbps, while the ST516v6 doesn't have official support for Annex M, but which can be enabled through telnet command line. ST516v6 uses Broadcom BCM6338 chip, and this chip supports ADSL2+ Annex M, but this feature is not automatically enabled by default in ST516v6. ST516v6 should be a good little cheap modem. Can be found for around 60$ online. Thank you for the detailed answer
I really appreciate it! |

| However, you should always keep in mind that even if a modem works well with a particular DSL line, you might not get the same result with the same modem.
Different modems behave differently even on the same line. Some can extract a better speed out of a bad line than others. If you have a good line then the ST516v6 is very good, if you have a poor line then the ST516v6 might not do as well. The 2wire modem should do better with a bad line than the ST516v6. |

thanks again maxfield
i guess i have to try my luck again with 2wire modem until i get a working one. |

1 edit | reply to pcouturier Seems like ST516v6 is the best modem to get because of all the tweaking options. Does a modem's characteristics affect the ping times when uploading/downloading at half of maximum capacity?
For example, My 2wire 2700g seems to lag 3-4ms above my cayman 3546 on the same line, even when both modems are idle and I'm just pinging the default gateway.
When I'm uploading @ around 40-50KB/s and start pinging the gateway continuously, I'll get distinct 'pulses' of ping spikes up to ~200ms in a field of ~20ms. My max upload speed is 85KB/s so I'm only using about half capacity.
Is there a modem that can smooth out or eliminate these spikes, or is it just the way PPPoE works and there is nothing that can be done?
Also, are there different revisions of the 516 v6 or are they all the same? Is there a 516 v7 or something better/newer with the same DMT tweaking features?
Thanks |

| reply to maxfield said by maxfield :I've learned from this forum that the 2wire modem can extract a better speed from a poor line than the Speedtouch. I beg to differ. I have the 2Wire and the Speedtouch 516/536v6 and the 516/536 is superior in my marginal line setting. -- Need-based health care not greed-based health care. |

The various firmware give you better line stability, depending on your conditions, but that is all. Thompson has locked down the firmware. -- Need-based health care not greed-based health care. |

I read in another thread that by default it's turned off but the BCM6338 chip supports it? |

| tried 3 or 4 of them (RE: 2wire) - none of them worked, so i just gave up.
Picked up new SS 4200 from ebay.ca for $24 inclusive, got better speed in comparison to SS 5200, ST516 and TPlink 8810.
so for bad/saturated lines i would highly recommend SS 4200.

Does modem selection affect that, or is it just the way PPPoE functions? |
