[WTB] Alternative School in NH needs Corporate throw-away PCs

The Community School is an alternative high school in my town and their computing space is a mess. I've volunteered to look for some corp donation machines within New England, down to Washington DC for uniform hardware at quantity. Anything 3 machines or more within MA, ME or NH, more at distance, would be picked-up by the school or a parent of one of the students. Seeking early P4 but fast P3s considered.

It's a small day school with 40-60 students and presently using a completely mismatched collection of mostly P2s with mostly 15" CRTs. Would love an upgrade of 17" or larger CRTs or older flats so begging for those too.

Thanks for any tips or gifts. Again, we'll do the leg work if the gift fits needs. Thanks.

Need any networking stuff?

Their gateway way outdated. I haven't assessed switches or the rest of it. Not sure I want to get that involved. This is one of those places you could get sucked into volunteering forever. I'd install a new gateway though cause it's inadequate.

exocet_cm has generously offered a manageable network switch. Primary need is old PCs for pickup in the North East. None yet.

I donate PC's to the elderly, low income and non-religious charities, and I know how hard it is to get anything semi decent donated.

and exocet is a very kind individual, deserves a thumbs up.

Bummer i just got this email from one friend. And she's right i forgot how cheap they are..

I think you know the State has a process of surplusing computers for 30 days and then they go to the Public Surplus for people to buy. If this person is looking for a special favor, I don't believe there are any. By the time computers get to surplus, they are 5-6 years old. The last time I went to that sale, I was advised by one of our techies not to bother as parts would probably no longer be available. Wished I could help, but I have no influence or advice.

I've been to there auctions.. there really not worth anything by that time.

Hey! Thanks for the offers & appreciation posts.

@Rungel - CT isn't too far for a single P4. We'd love it and can probably work out or pay for shipping if you're willing to box it up. I'll check with the school to see if they have anyone nearby to Baltic, CT.

Re-reading my OP I see it's unclear the regions we'll stretch to. Some of the students are from southern New England and there's a good chance arrangements can be made. Farther down the coast it gets less likely but for multiple matched hardware it might be worth a trip. The kids do go to Washington DC for Political studies.

I also do some donations of computers to people who don't have them, and getting parts and systems is hard.

A lot of computer shops will toss a older system because it is no good to them, but I try to fix them. Then they started to physically damage the boards.... by older systems I mean PII's and P3's..... I hardly find a P4...

You might try posting in Craigslist near your town, and also try Freecycle.

If anything, you got a free bump out of this...

Another thing you might want to try is the state government offices. I know in our area they are required to donate their old equipment to schools. Earlier this year one of the government offices got new PCs and all of their old stuff went to the local school districts. You had to take what they gave you, though. I know of one school that got ~25 2.4 Ghz PCs with 17" CRTs and a boatload of old Panasonic and Lexmark dot matrix printers. Which then went straight to landfill.

I just got an email back from our guys as well. The folks who support the local pcs. Since I am a server guy I didn't realize they practice the same principals as us , since we are a government contractor they can't give anything away , it all has to be destroyed.

And at this point that sort of made me sick. I can see killing the hdd, but the rest of ram and cpus should not be destroyed. Obviously all these 3 ghz p4's are being destroyed and they all have only 2 years use on them. Extremely wasteful and downright sickening.

I will check with my other guys at some of the other non government companies and see what we can dig up. I like it it is a noble cause.

Damn, that is monolithically stupid.

Ya know, I was planning to scarf DNA samples off all the gifted power buttons. I'm really doing this as an agent of North Korea.

I appreciate your attempt though. And also for letting us know how it works. I'll do my part to raise the public piss-off factor on that one. Is your company a DoD contractor?

I have alot of 17 and 19 inch monitors, about 6 black dell 17 inch monitors, at least. I also have some computers, I also have loads of keyboards and mice, all are PS/2 and balled, But I think I could make at least 2 or 3 full systems. I could make a delivery as well as frankly I had the idea of doing exactly what you are doing, but really couldn't find the time or resources to do it. Just a question... do the Comps need to have OS on them, as I am not sure if a couple of them are formatted right now.
PM me for a timeframe, so I can see what I have and what you need and then test it all to make sure they still work.
